Really sad news. It is breaking my heart to type this but some of you have been so kind I just wanted to let you know what happened.

When we went to see Honey yesterday the vet advised having her put to sleep. They didn't think she was capable of recovering and getting any better than she was.

So at 6 o'clock yesterday evening Honey died with her head on my knee.

I'm devastated.

Thanks to everyone for your kindness.

Hi,

My lovely lab had a fit yesterday morning. She paddled in the air and moved her head backwards and forwards. We took her straight to the vet carried on a blanket because she couldn't get up.

When we went to visit her today she is looking brighter but is doing some strange things with her legs. One front one is 'knuckling under', one back one is stretched straight out and the other back one is floppy and weak! She hasn't stood up since the fit. She can turn herself round with a bit of effort.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of labs (or other breeds) off their legs after a fit and what the result was. Would really appreciate any answers or comments.

The vet has given her a steroid injection today.

Thanks,

honeysmum

OMG really sorry to hear this! Sad

Has the vet said anything to you about what it could be?

I'm no expert but if the vet is unsure I'd be wanting them to run blood tests for diabetes etc and brain scan immediately.

Hope she makes a full recovery.

I`m sorry to hear about Honey, has she ever fitted before?, I ask that because its unusual although not impossible for them to fit at Honey`s age.

I wonder if its more likely to be a stroke or vestibular syndrome, if the latter they usually have a good chance of recovery within a few days, the former I`ve never experienced but think its much like humans, some recover better than others.

I`ll flag this up to our member (JohnW) who is very good on Health Issues and he`ll respond to you as soon as he can.

That was my first thought on reading the thread too (stroke or vestibular) - not that I'm a vet or have any experience of fitting, but I know when a couple of our older dogs have had something like this, they have lost the use of their back legs for a while (though recovered pretty quickly) and been very "giddy" for a few days.

Hope whatever it is, that Honey is feeling a lot better soon Group Huuug!

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the replies.

No, Honey has never had anything like it before. She's 9 years old (I don't know if I mentioned that)

The vet did bloods yesterday morning and said the results were good.

We had an initial consultation yesterday when we took her in. Today being Bank Hol they only had one vet on when we went to visit. She said there was some improvement in her mood and that she'd given her a steroid injection.

No one has said what they think it might be. I've Googled loads but most of the info on fits seems to be that dogs recover quickly.

The vet nurse just called while I was typing this. She said that Honey had weed and pood and after she'd cleaned her out - Honey made a real effort to help herself back into the kennel (with the nurse holding one end of the vetbed) which is a slight improvement.

We're going to see her again at 10 tomorrow.

Thanks,
Honeysmum

I'm really sorry to hear about Honey, you must be so worried. I hope she is a typically resiliant lab and back on her feet again soon. Let us know how she gets on.
