Bit rough last night
1st night we had 20 mins of whimpering then silence 'til morning. Last night we had only 5 minutes of whimpering then silence ... which was then repeated every 15 minutes for an hour
Woken by whimpering at 05.45 this morning, my wife went downstairs to find one relieved little pup (in that she wasn't alone).
How long can I expect the whimpering to last? I'm strong, and can whether the emotional wrench, my wife isn't so strong and I'm worried I'll get overruled
Still love her to bits though, she's settling right in. I had a comfy chair .... we now have a comfy chair

- we gave up after 2.5 month and ruby now sleeps upstairs with us adn at 7.5 months Rubys still wakes at 5am. BEFORE you panic Ruby is very very unusual.
Do you have the crate covered? do you have a radio playing softly? are you leaving a little light on? can you leave a worn item of clothing from you or your oh o she is comforted by the scent?
All of the above helped us -hope tonight is better

Wimpering sounds good compared to Echo's loud, sleep-shattering bark that is my 5.30 alarm call every day!!!
Echo is Vicky's Ruby's soul-mate!! Neither Ruby or Echo approve of lie-ins.
I've gone wwwaayyyy past fighting it now that Echo is 8 months old
Jessie is probably a 'normal' pup and you'll find that the whimpering tails off naturally and nights will get better over time!
On the other hand, you could join me and Vicky on the early-bird forums!!
Good luck, and 5.30 am is actually a really nice time of day once you get used to it!

Hi VJH,
The crate's "roof" has been covered. I bought a fleece blanket from Argos for a fiver to go in the basket, but my wife deemed to put it on the crate instead. It covers the roof of the crate and about 4 inches down either side.
No radio.
No light, but we have a streetlight outside and only have vertical blinds at that window, so its not "dark".
The item of clothing is a good idea, I'll try that tonight Thanks for the tip.
I'm not too bothered about the early start, I'm out of bed at 06.20 every morning to get ready for work. Its no problem for me at all
Thanks for the advice.

Hi,
Oh sorry it was a rough night for you all last night , but I have to say I think some would say you're very lucky!! You might not feel it now but with the whimpering lasting only an hour, thats fantastic for only her second night!! I know some on here have had pups that have howled all night!
One thing to perhaps try if you haven't done already, is to put something in there with both your scent on and your wifes scent - so either pop a towel under both your pillows for a couple of nights to then put in with little Jessie, or if you have an old fleece ( which you don't mind never getting back again!! ), then put that in with her. Both of these things will act almost as a comfort blanket, then if she wakes up, and has it near to her, she wont feel so alone as it will have your scent on it.
Another good thing to do if you dont already is to leave a small light on somewhere - either a little plug in light that just throws out some light for comfort but not too bright to keep her awake, or leave a landing light on, providing this doesn't shine straight into Jessies sleeping area.
We left the landing light on with Bailey for the first few nights when he used to wake up in the small hours , so that when he did wake up, he wouldn't be scared and he could see what was around him and that it was familiar! To be honest, his first few nights are almost identical to what you've said about Jessies!! He's 12 wks tomorrow and goes all the way through now, each pup varies greatly though BUT you must stick to the routine, they're like children, if you let them off the once, they'll expect it the second time!! Then before you know it little Jessie will be running the house! Perhaps its something to do with yellow labs, who knows?!?!?
Hope this helps & shes gorgeous too by the way.....others will be along soon to give pointers - Bailey was just up early - welcome to the world of Labs!! No more lie - ins now!!!

Hi Becs,
I have a feeling I'll be a "full" member of the early-bird forum in no time
As long as the whimpering tails off, I have no problem with getting up.
Less wary of the big garden this morning. I cut the grass yesterday, and its a lot less imposing She has so much energy, its fantastic!

Hi Gem,
This place is so friendly, I'm glad I found it so quick
The scent thing could be a real deal-maker I smell (so my wife says), so I'll wear an old t-shirt for the best part of the day today and donate it tonight. I have an old fleece too, it'll come to bed with me tonight
A nightlight? Wow, these pups really are just babies aren't they
I hear you about routine, I'll make my wife read this thread, I don't want to let Jessie off the once. Start as you mean to go on (is what I keep telling myself).
You guys rock! Thanks.

I found this website just before we got Bailey and I'd have to say that I'm a complete addict!!! Its a godsend with SOOO much info on it!
I often drag my other half on here to read the threads, its quite often when he's watching something he really wanted to see on TV as well but he realises its for the importance of the fluffy one!!
They are so like babies, and no matter how much research you do before you pick up pup, I think its only when you get them home that it registers!!! ie. the sleepless nights and the dependency etc!
Its all worth it though by what you get back from them!!

I second that - my husband is now used to it too- any question he has he says 'can you ask LF if Ruby can.............'
Also the GTs are fantastic too - Ruby was really scared of other dogs and we dont have many friends with dogs so we have been taking he r to every GT going since she was 12 weeks old now she is fine and LOVES other dogs. I really dont knwo what I would have done without this site to be honest

mmmm, maybe not - Hally didn't sleep through for a number of weeks we were like zombies by the time she did
Clover will sleep happily in or out of her crate in the day, but during the night - aaaaaaggghhhh - must I haven't tried covering the crate yet
