I would like to get some proper guards made for the car (MMG or Barjo tailgate guard and backseat guard) but would need to take them out them now and again to be able to use the 'extra' 2 fold down seats in the boot.
Just wondered how easily they can be removed really and whether this would loosen the fitting to the car over time?
Can anyone help, I can't picture how they are fitted!
Thanks
Nicola
It's why I like my Barjo cage. I can slip that out of the car in second. The downside is that there is certainly not as much room for the dogs as there is with guards, but still plenty of room for two dogs in my Volvo.
With my wonderful MMG guards (bought from a fellow LF-er), if fitted correctly they'd be a doddle to take out. There are some little pins that slide out, and the guard will then slide out of the brackets that are screwed into the car (and the brackets could stay in place). When I was fitting it by myself, I got in a bit of a strop so didn't do it properly... I just thought I'd rather never have any passengers again anyway My friend's just about to get one from MMG and they're fitting it for her, so that may be an option if you're being sensible about it!!
Thanks John - I had a look at the cages, but was also thinking that there would be more room with the guards.
Someone told me that the guards unclip from the mounting. I'm not sure if that is right, but if they can be removed that easily, it would mean the dogs wouldn't be very secure and padlocking the door would be a bit pointless!!
Maybe a cage is the way to go, as perhaps I can't have both re-moveability AND security?
Can your cage be folded down when you remove it?
Nicola
Clare I posted before I had seen your reply! So (and sorry if this sounds a stupid question) do you think they would be easy for just any random person to remove?!
I'm not planning to leave the dogs in the car and abandon them for hours but I would want to know that they were reasonably difficult to 'get at' if I had to leave them for a short period of time eg at training?
Thanks Nicola
The clip should be on the inside of the guard, so not easy at all... also if wanting to remove the mounting brackets.. one of their screws is on the inside too... I don't think it could be done without getting to it from the inside of the car. Mine locks too (don't know if that's standard).
I have just had my third MMG guard fitted (in about 20 years or so) at MMG. They are not really suited to taking in and out at all. You can take them out if you need to on the odd occasion but to do it regularly would be a nightmare.
I like them because of being able to use every inch of space, with eight soon to be nine dogs to fit in, and I can safely leave my boot up when training a few at a time with the rest safely locked into the vehicle with no overheating issues.
I guess you have to decide what are the most important factors for you. For me its definitely being able to leave the boot up and space .
I have a Barjo tailgate guard (you've seen it ) and it's quite straightforward to remove. The brackets are fixed to the car and then the guard shoves over the brackets and is fixed with screw thingies. It doesn't just whip off, takes a bit of fiddling with, but it can be done. I wanted to make sure I could get mine off and back on myself if need be, e.g. if I needed to change a wheel and get to the spare tyre.
I'm on my first day off work since Christmas and am bored.com, don't quite know what to do with myself - I'm either working or out with dogs usually, but dogs are sleeping and I can't be bothered to do any chores...... so here I am!
