sitting by him and he is stinking, He never wakes up older lab won't lie next to him. His fed on burns canine extra he has massive poo's as well (great topic of conversation) reduced his amount but i think he looks lean, most time runny poos dont think it agrees with him but don't want to keep changing his food and what do i change to ,burns is a popular dog food, my older lab dylan is on high oats and he is always on cut back rations any sugestions please.
The trouble with most dried foods, is if you feed them too much, it goes straight through them, rather than puts weight on them.
Cutting down his rations just a little bit usually helps in the poo and wind dept, but if he isn't keeping weight on and/or still has a problem with his tum, then changing food is about the only option.
Burns maybe a good food, but you always have to remember, not all foods suit all dogs.
I've tried a few foods with mine over the years and we have finally settled on Simpson's sensitive salmon & potato, a third of the quantity of poos always firm, coats look great, I know a few people on LF have swapped over to it and are very pleased and also recommend it
How much does he weigh and how much are you feeding him? Also, how many meals is he having? He should be having 3 or 4 small meals a day and Burns recommend 20g per kg of bodyweight for puppies, so if he weighs 10kg he should be having a total of 200g per day.
Burns shouldn't produce loose or large poos so if you are having these problems you are either feeding too much or it isn't suiting him. Increasing the amount in the hope of putting weight on will be counter-productive and will just result in loose stools.
If sticking to the recommended feeding amounts isn't working give Burns nutritional helpline a ring or email them to discuss it and they will suggest alternatives for you.

alphie weighs 11kg and he is on 200g per day in 4 small meals and still he is loose and poops are stinking, have tried to reduce food but starting to scavenge when out on a walk still loose and potent poops thinking about changing to taste of the wild my friends swear by it and there dogs look super on it, i like burns and my other lab is doing fine on this but as said no food is suitable for all dogs thanks for the replys most greatful
I would personally look at changing as it doesn't sound like it suits him, as the others said not all foods suit all dogs. I do understand your concerns with changing him over though and worrying about what to try next, been there done that! I had all those symptoms you describe with my boy. From personal experience I would recommend that if you go for a totally new food then change the carbohydrate source and the protein source totally to something he hasn't had before so if canine extra is rice and chicken (I think it is) then go for a potato and salmon or if your staying with a burns food they do a fish and maize or a pork and potato I believe so you could try one of those. Remember that it does take a while though so you need to stay on the food for weeks - not days - before you know if has made a difference. Also cut out the extras and treats in that period in case that's what's doing it little things can turn out to be the problem rather than the main diet...
Hi, hope you see this as this topic is a week old now!
Have you thought about trying the Burns High Energy Lamb instead of the Canine Extra?? Canine extra has chicken as its protein source and neither of my Labs get on with chicken based feeds - loose, smelly poo is the result! My GSP pup is the same and his poo is 100% better since going onto the High Energy Lamb from Royal Canin.
The vet told me alot of dogs don't get on with chicken feeds.
my first lab had the same problems! stinking & weight gain
after 9months i swapped on to the raw natural food diet! I put both my dogs on to the diet together, it seams like hard work to start with but once you get organised it's simple, no problems at all since & my first lab that had all the problems can eat larger amounts and looks leaner than before??? who'd have thought it!
they love it
Just in case OP is reading, I urge her also to consider that the puppy may be ill and have an infection. 11 kg is not big for a 15 week old puppy, he is also lethargic and sleeps all the time and OP says he is thin. I think he sounds ill and should have a vet visit!
I'm going to keep going on about this as a possibility because my puppy was very ill and no food changing was ever going to sort it out. He's fine now but needed proper medical treatment. At one stage he was on a drip because he was fading fast......but as a novice labrador owner I wasn't able to recognise clear signs of illness and distinguish between soft poos, food disagreeing or serious infection.
