I switched both my Labs to Arden Grange lamb from Burns as keeping them a good weight was a struggle and Ambers' coat went quite dry. They do really well on the Arden Grange so worth you looking at if you can't get the Burns sorted.

I've just bought a bag of Burns High Energy Lamb for my 10 week old GSP pup as I found that good in Amber's puppy days and his poo on the Royal Canin is horrid- v.smelly and alot of it even with me decreasing the fedding amounts!

Thanks Rach, have just looked up stockist for Arden Grange, and waitrose sell it, just need to see how much they charge, as direct it is only £40.49, so a saving compared to Burns.

I will be dog walking via Waitrose today Smile .

Am interested in the Skinners though as it is cheaper still, but can't find local stockist, all seems to be online shopping. So thanks Shell, all savings welcome.

Be careful about falling into the trap that the food would be cheaper, it quite possibly will be cheaper per bag, but the amount you need to feed would be greater so you will use more than the so called dearer food!

I divide the weight of the bag of food by the amount of food I feed to get an idea of how many days it will last. Then I divide the amount of days I get out of the bag to the price to work out a cost per day.

Its a better indicator of what the food is ACTUALLY costing rather than how much the bag costs! Wink

Just a quickie on a completely different note to those who look at their dogs peridoically as suddenly being skinny. Obvious as it might seem, coat changes and then being naked can fool the eye terribly into thinking them having dropped a load of weight. I know it often does mine. Then suddenly they come back into coat and you think 'ohhh thats good'....but if you bump them foodwise when they come back into coat they are porkier than you wanted them, and it all becomes a right to-do Wink

Just as seems quite a few people think their dogs are dropping weight on Burns. I believe its not a fab food for hungry greedy Labradors but I just wanted to stress how important it is to put them on the scales to check its REALLY weightloss and not just your eye with them in bra and thong only not a winter overcoat Wink

The canine extra was their 'junior' food when my lot were on Burns. I stopped using it because it just wasn't giving them the energy they needed, as if their batteries were running out. And rather than feed more and more, or complement their diet with something else, I decided to swap to a different brand.
After all, Burns is supposed to be a complete food with lots of expertise gone into their feeding guides. However, I'm not the only one who has had this problem. It might be fine for the fireside pet dog, but I personally don't think it gives my workers what they need.

Thanks all. I have spoken to my local pet store who are very experienced and they feed their own lab Skinners so I have decided to introduce her to Skinners and see how she gets on.

It seems so awkward to get the balance right with Burns that I think maybe a change of diet might be the way forward.

Di - I take note of what you say but Ruby is a very fine/skinny girl and I can see far more than just the last couple of ribs when she turns when running. She has also lost condition on her hips and her trainer who loves how slim she is has commented on her loss of condition in the last few weeks so it's definitely time to try and get a little bit of extra weight on her.

Thanks Fee an Di,

Fee, I take your point on price an quantity, I must say I have a blip every so often as Mischa does require probably 100grams a day more than the guide to keep her looking ok, she also likes to go full pelt when out, and laze's about when at home. So she is obviously burning it off, and she is still a youngster, I imagine this can all change when and if she slows down later on.

Di, you are right about the coat, at the moment she looks moth eaten, not looking her best at all, her blonde highlights all over her bum and legs look no better for a good brush an comb, am seriously thinking of strong hold hairspray Rolling Eyes. Hopefully she will get her shine back when shedding is finished and look like our athletic Mischa again.

June
