Hello,

I was cleaning out my dog cupboard yesterday and was thinking about all the stuff I need to keep in 'just in case'. As a new dog owner 6 years ago I would never have imagined all the things that I'd keep in for the dogs. So I thought it'd be a useful thread (inspired by the FOS one), especially for first time dog owners, if we all list the things that we have in and what they can be used for. I remember as a newbie I was always taking Dexter to the vet or ringing the vet, so a thread like this would have suited me Smile

Aloe vera gel - irritated/itchy/dry skin... also sunburn, but never needed it for that.

Aloe vera juice - cleaning ears

Calendula gel - to help healing of wounds

3% hydrogen peroxide - to induce vomiting Shocked (just a teaspoon or two should do it) This one sounds dodgy, but my vet recommended keeping it in as Eddie's been in trouble twice for eating nasties!!

Activated charcoal tablets - in case they eat anything they shouldn't and start to feel queezy for it (Eddie and the fungus incident comes to mind Rolling Eyes ). I would give two tablets twice a day, but only for the one day... if no better, probably a vet-job Rolling Eyes

Flowers of sulphur - hotspots/wet eczema (just dab the dry powder onto the gooey hot spot)

Chappie or Nature diet salmon and prawn - nice sensitive food for if they have dicky tummies.

Liquid paraffin - for if they've eaten anything large, to help it pass (Melvin ate a cooked rib bone, we used this, he's 35 kg and got 10 mLs 3 times a day for 2 days, on food).

Thornit ear powder - for ear mites. Never had to use this, but apparently it works wonders.. you just put some of the powder on the inside of their ear flap (not in the ear canal) and let it work its magic.

That's all I can come up with now, I hope some of you can add more Smile

Slippery Elm powder - helps bind up loose tums and loosens constipation.

ahhhh.. I'll have to invest in some slippery elm Very Happy Any recommendations on quantity? Do you just add it to food?

I also keep a tube of pro-kolin in too for those very bad tummy days (not really 'natural' or 'alternative', but certainly 'useful' Laughing )

I have a doggy first aid box, it has in it:

Bottle of rehydration solution (chicken flavour apparently lol)
Tin of Prescription chicken and rice diet (I keep an eye on the dates on these).
After Maple's recent allergy to a wasp sting, some piriton and some prednisolone.
Alfie has dry eye so a tube of artificial tears, can also be used for flushing out dirt etc from eyes.
Some Canaural ear ointment for mucky ears.
A roll of self sticking vet wrap
Some non stick dressing
Pair of tweezers
Green stick think for removing ticks called an O Tom
Tweezers

I nearly always have a tube of tomato puree in the fridge.....for fox poo...

I have most of the above in my cupboards and I also have.....

Steri-strips
non adhesive dressings
cotton wool
Purple Spray
Hibiscrub
Optrex Infected Eye Drops (great for when you get that first hint of Conjunctivitis)
Rescue Remedy
and some broad spectrum AB's (such as Synulox) too.

Confused I'm probably being really thick but why tomato puree Embarassed
loving this thread...loads of tips. Very Happy Very Happy
A drop of tea tree or lavender on bites or small clean cuts is good.
They are only a few of the essential oils you can use neat ( even on humans!)
I keep a cream in the fridge which has tea tree, lavender and yarrow added. Stops all itching and heals bites like magic for humans and animals. Smile

It's an antiseptic spray. It's more commonly used on horses, but works just as well on dogs. It does make them go a bit Purple Patched though Wink .

The Dorwest version should have a dosage on it.

I have to say I don't have any of these things, and (touch wood), in 8 years (and some 30 years of dog ownership including 5 caring for 64 boarders) , never needed any of them Shocked

I do keep Benilyn, honey and a syringe handy and did have some Synulox here until recently. Also keep Flea treatments in the house at all times 'just in case' (i.e. always stock up straight after we use them)

Also keep Dorwest Arnica tablets and Merc Viv (good for the runs) handy.

Then of course, there is the cupboard of supplements just for Clover - but that'll keep for another day Rolling Eyes Embarassed

In some ways I guess I am lucky living where I do, as we are literally a 24/7 village and city and therefore if we have needed something urgently - have always been able to get it.

I draw the line at even attempting to make Clover sick with some of the things she's eaten - if I've any concerns, it's straight to the vets without hesitation Rolling Eyes
