Avoid Furminators and shedding blades like the plague - all they do is wreck a Lab's undercoat - and having see some other thick coated breeds, it does the same thing with them.
I just brush mine on a regular basis, as Jill says, from a young pup - we didn't with Hally, and now - even at 8 years old, brushing is a game - a lesson learnt
