Hi,

We're feeding Harvey (11.5 weeks old) 70g of JWB Turkey & Rice Puppy, 4 times a day (280g a day)

On the packet they recommend quite a lot more than this. Does anyone know how accurate their recommendations are from experience.

His poos are quite firm, and he's certainly not fat! should I be giving him more.? He's 9.6KG and is a chunky chocolate boy.

The problem is, every dog is different. My own dogs are good do-ers, so if I fed them anywhere near the amounts JWB recommended, they would have been the size of a house. My girls only ever had just over half the recommended amount but they weren't growing pups when I fed JWB, so I couldn't tell you how much I would have fed them then.

I only ever go by eye when feeding. As long as my pups are growing steadily and putting on weight without looking too fat or too thin, then I guess the amount I'm feeding them is ok and I can only suggest you do the same, because one pup might need double the amount another pup would do.

It's hard by eye, as I've never had a Lab before (or any pup for that matter) Smile

Still, he looks covered and not too thin, so I guess I'll just keep going as I am and steadily increase as he gets older....

Thanks

Believe me you'll know if you can see his ribs! Post a pic if you're unsure there are lots of experienced people on here who are used to looking at all types of pups and will be able to advise and we love puppy pics anyway!

If he looks covered and feels as if he's wearing a blanket (not a sheet or a quilt) over his ribs, then he's probably about just right.

I tend to increase their food gradually until they are about 6 months old and then as their growth rate slows down, I either keep their rations the same, or reduce them slightly if they start to look podgy. Although I have had one or two who suddenly needed extra, as we upped the amount of exercise around their first birthday.

As I give them a brush every few days, I have a little feel of their ribs and then adjust their feed amount accordingly. I guess it's a bit like putting on your jeans and thinking "These weren't this tight a couple of weeks ago....best I cut down a bit" Wink .

Is your pulet show or working bred? Do you know? I feed JWB t my litters and puppys and so for showbred or part showbred I would usually say between 280 - 300gms a day over 4 meals at your boys age, so sounds entirely right to me. A smaller framed working bred puppy I would probably say a little less... but at 11 weeks at nearly 10kgs he is spot on weightwise for your averagely sized showbred puppy s just presuming his 'genetics' Wink

Sounds perfect. I would up to about 350 gms a day over 3 meals by the time he is about 4 months old. Then around 350 - 400gms a day over two meals from 6 months onwards and that would be the time to swap to adult food.

Just thw way we do it here with JWB.

Thanks Di! I have his 5 gen KC certificate, but not sure if they are show breed or working. However, after meeting both his parents I would definitely say show breed Smile (especially his Dad, who is massive!!)

Also, the vet keeps saying he's going to be a big boy. Laughing

If you want to work it out, and he certainly sounds showbred, on his 5 generation pedigree, look at the dogs with titles... and if they are pretty much all 'CH' (Champion) or SH CH (Show Champion) he is showbred. If they say FT CH (Field Trial Champion) he is working bred. Or of course there *could* be a mix but usually more often its one or the other behind both parents.
