After calling dogsitters, vets and even kennel places... I ended up calling the breeder of the dog I mated my Rosie with last year. I thought, as she has both (obviously, as she is a breeder) she might have something that works for her.
Well, turns out she will have Rosie for the week I am away. She says these sprays do not work and the only way is to keep the dog/bitches separate.
What a relief.... plus I completely trust her. Rosie stayed there for 3 to 4 days last year and she loved playing around with the other bitches.
Yes, all my apprehensions about this bitch spray were right. Everyone (other than people that sell them) say it doesn't work.
*HUGE sigh of relief*
Thanks for all of you for the advice, I knew you were all right, I was just trying to find the answer that doesn't exist (other than spayed).
I was going to wade in with the others and say don't rely on bitch spray as contraception, but I am glad to see you have found a solution.
I actually used bitch spray once - on a dog rather than a bitch.
Before anyone tells me how nuts I am (and they may well be correct there), let me explain that my cocker spaniel bitch was in season. I left her at home and took only my labrador boy (Charlie) out. However, it soon became apparent that he was carrying some of Topsy's "in-season" scent, as he kept collecting other males and being accosted by them. Charlie is not the sort of dog to take something like that without challenging it, so after advice from here I began dousing him with bitch spray before each walk (he was NOT impressed). It did seem to help, but then, of course, he is a dog. I wouldn't recommend relying on it for a bitch.
