I wanted to know whether anyone has had any success with bitch sprays and which ones are you buying.

I have a huge dilemma, months ago I booked a holiday to Wales (for last week of April 2011) thinking my Rosie would love the walks, and now, her season has started. Absolutely gutted, she will now have to stay in the cottage or in the car. However, I do not want to make matters worse and I would like to use the bitch spray too.

I have never used bitch sprays and would like to hear people's thoughts on this product please.

Lu

I have used them years ago but they weren't very effective, it was about 30 years ago Embarassed. You used to be able to get tablets which I believe masked any smell when they peed. Perhaps check with your vet?

oh I know this isn't very helpful but can you maybe just re-arrange your holiday at all? nellie was good to go out again on about day 23 so it wouldn't be post-ponig it by much.
Or board her with a friend and leave her behind Sad

I think it will really add some stress to your holiday tbh and even if you keep her in the cottage, imagine what that will be like for any dog owners that stay there afterwards.

These girls never have great timing do they!

Postponing is not an option...

I just called the vet and they told me to use the spray. They reckon it will definitely help.

My dogsitter cannot have her either...

What a timing! I will just have to bring her with me and she will be cottage bound.

Well I hate to disagree with a vet, but the spray will not help when she is in full blown season.

I use the spray at the end of a season, when I have bathed my bitches, then spray them before going back to gundog training with other dogs. It just helps to not distract any dogs that are in the class.

It does not work during the season though, and whatever you do if you try it don't actually spray her bits because it stings like mad Shocked .

The sprays will not work! I've come across people with red hot inseason bitches that have used the spray to absolutely no effect! My poor lads will vouch for the fact they definetly did not work! Laughing

Thanks...

I have to say I have always been sceptical and have never used them. But now with this incredible bad timing I am desperate.

She will come with us and stay in the cottage, then we will just have to clean thoroughly and use a deodorizer to get rid of Rosie's smell. *sigh*

She will miss on all the walking we were planning to do.

Also called the kennels and they won't have either.... so I am pretty stuck now.

and another thing she will hate will be the nappies!! Rolling Eyes as it is not my house cannot have her dropping blood everywhere...

Poor thing

I was going to say the same. Like Jill, I would only ever use it right at the tail end of their season, just to mask the last remnants of odour, even then though, I've had some dogs very interested, so it certainly won't cover the smell of a bitch in mid heat.

Will you be allowed to leave her inside the cottage if you go out for a while, as I know most holiday lets insist you don't leave the dog alone on their property? Although I guess if she was crated, then she wouldn't be able to do any damage....She still might bark/whine though.

I do think you could be setting yourself up for a miserable holiday if you take her with you and not only that, if the person who rents the cottage after you has boy dogs, it could ruin their holiday too.

Have you tried to find any other dog sitters? Perhaps your one could recommend another with a vacancy. Or maybe ask here, as I know some LFers dog sit.

And yes, us girls do have the most awful sense of timing sometimes. Wink

Yes - I've also been told by some male owners that dogs are so familiar with some of the sprays, they are as 'tuned in' to the sprays as they are a bitch in season (how true this is I don't know) - but I certainly wouldn't risk taking an in season bitch away.

I also wouldn't leave any dog in the car at this time of year even for short periods without comprehensive sun blockouts and ventilation (i.e. boot and windows open) - not really something you can do in the middle of nowhere if you decide you want to go for a walk

I was going to mention this too. I've already read of a dog dying this year after being left in a hot car and that was with the owner apparently visiting them regularly and leaving a window open and water for the dog. Just not worth the risk.

There's also the risk of dog theft - a number of dogs are stolen from/in cars Sad

Have you tried explaining the situation to the people you're hiring the place from? Sometimes they can re-offer it at short notice? Though I guess they may not want you to take an in-season bitch there anyway, if they knew?
