Willow didnt start her training classes until she was 6 months old as we started her gun dog training and she had to be 6 months old to start she did have basic training at home and in the field but she should really have had puppy classes first as she can still be a bit over impressed by the other dogs in the class

We did good citizen with Fin and I think it cost £36 for the six sessions. Even now we pay £10 a lesson for gundog training. Even if your pupster knows the basics doing them in a class is really good for them and it's great for socialisation. And you get to be star of the class! You can look up all the clubs online now - www.findaclub.org.uk

I think I'd be a bit miffed if I was forced to pay out so much for something that my pup already did well. However, puppy class is about so much more than teaching sit and down and I think it would still be worth your while to attend a puppy class.
I can understand your reluctance to pay so much money and I would have walked away too at that price (I was quoted £70 for a 10 week agility course and walked away). Ask around and see who other people recommend (but remember that what works for one doesn't work for everyone else) and you could also have a look on the APDT list for your area. These trainers have to be tested to go on the list so they do have a certain level of ability. There are other trainers out there who have completed correspondence courses or have just set themselves up with little training or experience themselves.
Any good trainer will let you observe a class before you join and I really recommend you do this after I rejected 2 dog training clubs because I didn't like their methods. The one I eventually went to is run by 3 APDT trainers, charges £30 for a 6 week puppy course, offers telephone back up between sessions, then charges £2.50 per week thereafter with free good citizen tests. People who are having real problems can have a home visit for a donation to the club but the trainers don't profit from it.

Merlin's 6 week puppy course will be £35 at my training club, but I also pay membership (£ , split that between two dogs works out as £4 each. So I suppose I am paying around £40 for 6 weeks, would I pay more? Yep! If it was a club as good as the one I belong to, but as Di said do look before you join.
My club won't allow a dog to progress to proper obedience until they have done either puppy class or beginners class. I personally don't mind going over and over the basics as I think it helps reinforce them
In fact I am attending 3 separate puppy classes just for the socialisation aspect. I started one last night at Pets at Home and yes Merlin could do everything standing on his head because I've been clicker training since 8 weeks, but working in a different environment with different distractions did him the world of good and got him really focusing on me.
