... Should I find someone else?
Rang a bloke about lessons for ren (12-13 week old pup) and he said for £75 quid she would go on a puppy class which is 6 sessions learning basic comands, sit down come etc.
I told him ren has pretty much already got most os these down pat and im covering the basic steps. I need help with the more advanced stuff, lead control etc and he said that i should do the puppy session first. I said i really wasnt interested in that and he basically said that he didnt think my dog is able to do these things at 13 weeks. And if she can then she wont be able to do it with other dogs about.
Is this guy after my money and not actually interested in training my dog?
I agree with massive distractions going on around her she is incline to ignore comands. but she IS just 13 weeks. she knows the comands and does obey them. So surley I dont need to pay £75 for something im already ontop of?
It does sound expensive but i have to say i agree with him about you still needing a good puppy class. Its one thing a pup doing all the commands at home but with distractions of diff surrounds, the smells, the other puppies etc. Its great socialisation too.
My puppy classes were £5 each

I would give him a miss, but check out other puppy class's in your area and give them a ring, ask if you can go and observe before you commit to enrolling. If they agree then I would think they are confident in what they are doing.
Or, better still word of mouth from someone you know, either the vet or local pet shop, people on dog walks etc.
I would still want to see what classes are like before signing up though, and £76 for six weeks is a lot, more like £6/£8 per session in our area.
Just to add, and others may not think it is a good idea, but the class I went to for the more advanced sessions preferred the pups to be about six months old, having said that there are other classes that do all the stages, starting at Rens age, and you just go through all the stages after passing first then on to next.
I paid 4/5 pounds for Luna's Good Citizen Award classes with APDT registered trainer. The courses were about 6-8weeks long I think.
Can you g along to watch a class this trainer is leading without Ren to see if you think it is worthwhile. He should welcome you to do this before investing that amount of money.
I agree that that price is way over the top, where are you from, if in or near London the it will cost more because everything does.
He is right though about ren needing to learn how to do the things he can do at home with distractions, there will be a few pups there and believe they will be MUCH more interesting to him than you with a bit of sausage
If he was giving you one to one sessions then that is a great price for a puppy class with others I would expect to pay £60 for say 12 session / 1 term.
I do think that at 13 weeks she may do some bits fairly well at home but sit, down, stay and come are the basis of everything and they need to be very good before you move on. I have a working lab and I would expect to be doing those and heel work over and over and over in various situations for months before moving on tk anything.
I think im going to go with Fiz on this one. Find another person to help out. I didnt much care for this guys attitude... that and people who disagree with me like that put my hackles up! hehe
Might ask the vet who they recomend. Ive been trying for 2 weeks to get in touch with a trainer. every one else ive rung who do dog training I end up speaking to the other half "oh you need to speak to my wife about dog training but she isnt in, give me your number and I will get her to ring you back" And they just dont. This is the only guy thats got back to me >.<
The kennel club do something called a gold, silver and bronze good citizen award which is all based around caring for your dog and training and control - sit, stay, heel etc. I would give them a call - I tried the kennel club when j lived in Devon and grouse was small for a socialisation club and they were so helpful - they sent ms LOADS of local clubs including those that do their good citizen scheme. They will have local lists if you are struggling to find someone else.
Case in point; my own dogs. Getting them to sit, and stay, and down etc etc is one thing at home - but in a hall full of dogs? They're not always so keen - as I learnt last week. We've had our rescue boy Frank for a year now, and my hubby argued that I didn't need to take him to a beginners class. He sits, he waits, he stays, he lies down. His recall is 95%... but when I took him into class I struggled to keep his focus. So I'm a bit surprised that a 13 week old pup wouldn't benefit from starting with a beginner class, like my boy. Remember the training is really aimed at you; it teaches you the right methods to train your dog effectively. You've made a great start... but a puppy class will help you achieve more and sets the basics for you to build on.
Why not give the classes a go; I'm amongst the minority here but I don't think a good KC registered training school is expensive at the price you quoted. I know Shell and I paid £50 and I think our class is for 6-8 weeks- if I can improve Franks training he's worth the investment!
