I dont no which one to do of the above! I took Indi back and they arent happy! Her amylase levels are back to normal so her pancreas has gone back to normal but now her Kidneys are having problems and she also still has sign of some bacteria/infection/parasite!!! We have been told she may have allergies and that whatever she is having or being exposed to could be whats causing the problems. So now she is on a vet specific diet that I cannot get anywhere else but the vets and god knows how much that is going to cost! I have 28kg of dried dog food in the cellar and around 20kg of dog treats none of which she can have now! I feel ive done something wrong to cause all this.
Then to top it off she still has ear infections and they tried to clean it out with water etc today and look down with a camera and she flipped! She was shaking and trembling and cuddling in close to me!!! I was soo upset i burst into tears in the surgery and havent stopped since! She has to go in on tuesday to be sedated and then they are going to clean her ears out properly! Despite the fact we clean them regularly with stuff we got from the vet last time. Im just so upset at what ive done wrong to cause her to be like this. Im suppose to be going back to the UK today for 4 days to see my family and now I dont want to leave her and going to be spending the whole time upset and worrying about her!
Many points of your post concern me, hayley, but when I had a dog with continual outburts of ear infection, i found he was allergic to raw egg. I'm not saying you feed raw egg, but what I'm saying is have food intolerances been checked if this keeps occuring AND you are cleaning her ears regularly...?
When you clean them do you put drops down deep in her ear canal, and then pull the ear upwards into a tunnel and massage your thumb at the base of her ear till you hear 'squelch squelch' meaning the drops have hit their mark....?

They have given her vet concept food - hypo allergenic. I have been looking at the royal canin hypo allergenic and going to speak to vera about maybe switching her onto one of those brands later if she does have the allergies as they will be easier for me to get back in the UK.
They have some of her blood and i told them to test for all allergies! She has sent them off and hoping to get the results next week when we go back. She isnt given any egg by us so unless there is an egg based product in her food then thats the only place she is getting it from.
As for ear cleaning we are using a product called Otodine. We put them in the ear canal then massage the ears - hearing a nice big squelch! Then use gauze to clean them out (this is how the vet taught me to do it). Then i have to wait 10 minutes before putting in her ear drops which are called surolan.
She put a camera down her ear today - when we managed to get her to keep still and i even saw the inside of her ear. I could see little brown clumps which vera said is the ear wax and the dust/dirt/old hairs clumped together hence why she is going in to be sedated so vera can get a proper look. The problem with the ears is the gunk deep down in her ear canal where i cant get with the gauze etc.
I cant fault Vera - she is thorough and a great vet and has such a way with Indi. She is trying her best to find the cause. I just hope we catch whatever it is.
I just dont know if i have done something to cause all this!
Sorry to hear you are having so many issues.
I just wanted to say that I lived in Germany until last year and my cat got put on a special diet food that I could only get from the vet. I have to say I was shocked at how cheap the food was in comparrison to UK prices (this goes for al vet fees actually). Also does your vet accept tax free forms for food? Mine did , so I got the extra 19% off too.
Fingers crossed for some good news soon.
____________ Brought Willow home on the 11/03/11. She is adorable!
Hayley I'm seconding Di, THIS IS NOT YOUR FAULT. They get poorly it happens, our pups breeder told me his allergies etc were all my fault too but she's an idiot, our Vet says it just is not the case.
Have you looked online my Sam is on Hills d/d cans atm and it's much cheaper to buy in bulk from Viovet than from the Vets themselves. Some of the hypoallergenic vet foods do have ingredients some dogs are allergic to in them so hopefully you'll get those blood tests back asap then you can get the right one - Hills, Burns, Royal Canin, Purina Vet all do the specialist foods so theres plenty of choice, though they are all a bit expensive I'm afraid. You can make treats from them though so then you can still treat her its just a bit boring because its only their special food but hey better than them being poorly.
When Sam was having food problems his ears got bad too, when his tum is well so are his ears! He is hypersensitive to them being touched when they're bad though normally he'll let me do anything to them so I think it's a pain thing. I do drops when he's tired and distracted as its easier then if he sees me coming he's off! We had otodex drops. I found byotrol wipes work really well now if I see the first signs of ear probs I wipe them out with the special ear byotrol ones and it seems to work.
Sam had to have a sedation as he's suddenly got nervous about them doing his anal glands (he's going to have to have them removed ) but it wasn't as bad as I thought, he couldn't eat or drink which to him was the worst bit then they gave a quick injection and told us to wait 20mins he just got all dozy then they did it and we took him home. He was a bit like a drunk, legs uncoordinated and he was trying to follow us about but was too tired it was so sweet poor little mite, Mum carried him into his bed in the lounge and he slept for hours so I think Indi will be fine, she'll just need a bit of tlc.
Hope she feels better soon and give yourself a break, you're a brilliant Mum she's lucky to have you.
I didn't notice your second post earlier and I just wanted to say I totally agree with Di and Paws. Indi is lucky to have such a lovely mum and one who cares so much about her. Vera sounds great and I'm sure she'll help you get Indi better. Sending lots more vibes and Hugs.
My Jack used to have intolerences to, beef, chicken, fish. When we were in Germany we used to feed him Happy Dog lamb and rice, 43 euros. He used to suffer with his ears as well, we used surolan and we used an ear cleaner that we used to get from the PX at JHQ.
Sounds like your vet is doing everything for Indi and you will all adapt to the changes
