Took Milo to the vets the yesterday & was told that Milo is overweight. He is 27 kg & should be 24/25kg. Although she said you can tell he is very muscular, she said he could do with losing a few pounds - I was in shock! He doesn't look fat!

This is running alongside Lacey being told Alfie is overweight! So maybe Alfie & Milo could diet together?? Smile

They recommended Hills light or something and the nurse pulled a funny face when I said he was fed on Autarky! I've just cut down his food by a quarter and watching the treats he has! I can't really give him anymore exercise, he's already having just over an hour a day!! Hopefully he'll loose the weight ok because he has to go back again in a month. I felt really bad as I honestly never expected her to say that!!

Don't feel bad sarah! I have to watch sasha's weight as she is getting older. I used to give her Hills Science light as my vet recommended it too but after reading the thread about Hills testing the food on animals and in appauling ways I decided to change her to either Burns or James Wellbeloved, they also do some light versions to help with weight.
Too be honest sasha's coat looks better since the change than when she was on Hills and she seems to enjoy it.

If you just cut down the amount of food in Milo's bowl he will probably lose the weight, sasha did. It was hard cutting her down though, I was so used to giving her a larger amount but it is worth it, less trouble for her joints as she gets older hopefully. She's nearly 10 and touch wood only gets a little stiff from time to time.

It just doesn't seem suprising that your vet is recommending Hills Rolling Eyes
How old is Milo?
You say he doesn't look fat but if you think he needs to lose weight cut his food down and give little or no treats, and keep up the exercise.

Have to say Milo didn`t look fat at the Dovedale GT!!!, why vets always have to recommend the stuff they sell I have no idea!, well I do, its the money they make off it of course Evil or Very Mad

I wouldn`t worry too much about it, just reduce his usual feed as you are doing and cut down the treats, once he`s able to get more exercise he`ll soon lose the excess if he has any, CJ did Very Happy

It makes you feel so bad when they tell you that they're overweight, doesn't it? Poor Alfie seems to hardly have any food in his bowl for breakfast and dinner since i was told he's fat Sad I'm not going to feed Alfie the hills that the vets recommended, it seems a bit of a con really as i can only buy the type they recommend from them Rolling Eyes and it's a big no no cos they test on animals anyway so i've done what you're doing and just cut down on his food and treats.

I looked at the pics of Milo from the GT and i must say he's gorgeous, i LOVE his colouring Very Happy

Keep us posted on how Milo's diet goes!!

Milo is 1 year old.

Thanks Lacey - my boy is gorgeous, but I am biased Smile

I'm not changing Milos food, hes improved so much since I switched from Eukanuba to Autarky & I wouldn't change back. He'll just have to have a little less food in his bowl like he is & as you have all said i'm sure he'll soon shed the extra weight, poor thing looks at me after hes finished his food as if to say "Please mum, can I have some more?" Smile

Hi Sarah,

Milo doesnt sound overweight to me. He's 12 months isn't he? Charlie is 14 months and was exactly 29kgs last Friday. I'd say Charlie sometimes looks too skinny to me!

They're from the same breeder, so along the same lines - I'd imagine 24/25 kg would be too little? I'd hate Charlie to lose any weight!

Dont worry he sounds fine to me Very Happy

If I was told Jet was overweight I would be shocked- He is 30 kgs. You can just see the ripple of ribs in his coat and he has a rather handsome waist line unlike mine- says she munching on a donut!! Embarassed

Like us humans each dog will have it sindividual 'best weight' and that Jet falls ourtside the guidelines for Labs in my Vets surgery is acknowledged- luckily Rolling Eyes as the Nurse would be giving me what for!!!
