Buddy is a lead chewer any chance he gets and he has already chewed through one lead and almost another. He is now well on his way to chewing through his long training line Rolling Eyes .

I spied a chain type lead at Pets At Home and wondered if anyone had any experience or opinions about them. I'm thinking this may be the only way to deter him chewing through his leads which is become a little costly. However, they are much heavier that regular nylon or leather leads which I worry may be an issure with trying to encourage loose lead walking as the chain really hangs.

If it is still a regular clip lead (not a check chain) then i'm sure it'll be fine and the weight should make no odds to your loose leash training.

Have you tried spraying anti chew on your regular lead though to just break the habit? Smile

A chain lead!

Just imagine if he tried to bite on the lead and a tooth went through a link. Then all it needs is for him to try to jerk free to break a tooth!! I hate them and think they are down right dangerous!

Regards, John

It's a regular clip on Sarah and not a check chain... I don't like them. It is a lead which is clipped onto the collar, but instead of being nylon or leather, it is metal which he can't chew.

Thank you for your post x

This is one of my concerns John, but just as easily, he could bite through his lead and run where he may be hurt or worse. It only takes seconds for him to get through and inch of lead. He has very powerful jaws.

I wondered at first whether this could be an idea thinking if you can't beat 'em chewing then join'em but these aren't chew-proof...

Does he like to carry something in his mouth? Luna likes to have something in her mouth when excited so I took to carrying a toy keyring in my pocket to put in her mouth when she got excited otherwise she'd go for the lead.

It's a chain lead. I've seen the broken tooth.

I think most of my pups have chewed leads at some time. It's simply a training matter, as all puppy things are.

Indi chewed through at least 4 leads whilst she was a pup and as soon as she lost all her baby teeth it stopped! Now she occasionally chews them but usually when we have to tie her to a table or something if we are out and she is bored. She stopped regularly chewing her lead once they all fell out and she got her adult teeth - now she holds it in her mouth and brings the lead to you but doesnt chew! Its a phase just continue with training - we used the "drop it" command and reinforced the positive with treats

I can understand your fraustration, but with consistant verbal correction this will improve, a firm NO each time he attempts to bite at the lead will help. You may find yourself saying no every few seconds but eventually it will start to sink in.

Good luck
