Di.Interesting what you say about some showdogs being able to "sit"and "stand".I was a bit worried about Dylan being taught the command "sit"at obedience classes due to the fact that I show him as well.
So far he seems to know the difference when I have a treat in my hand as he will only "sit" when told to do so otherwise he stands for a treat.

Emma,
Its funny, there are waggers and there are non waggers... and nothing in this world can seemingly make a wagger stop wagging (except a REALLY long class on a hot day maybe) and yoou have to REALLY think outside the box to get even half a wag off a non wagger
I have had a few dogs who plant their legs beautifully, the ear action is lovely, and they are tense, alert and look great..... but the tail is as vertical as you can get
My old boy Dylan was a classic case in point.... he won his share of good stuff, but never whilst wagging his tail and inch. If a judge, as some do, seem to only look at waggers then he was screwed, but if they just liked balance and a dog they could go over without it knocking them out, he was your man
I found going first in a class really helped, second if I couldn't blag first place fast enough..... and definately watching the judge like a hawk as they scribble and chat with the steward at the table and only getting him set up a millisecond before she walks to look at the dogs. He would wag about three times.... then slow for a fourth...then droop.... But it was generally just long enough for a quick looksie. Then being at the front of the line to move them round was ace because you could charge round, then keep going and immediately bring him round still happy from being on the move to stand infront of the table for the individual, and i;d get a few more wags again. If we weren't first, and had to work our way round a ring then go infront of the judge he tended to be flat as a pancake even if I danced about like a loon as the person before me was being gone over.
I also found it helped, ignoring him totally for a few dogs before he was looked at if stuck way down a long line....and fussing another dog made him slightly jealous and wanting my attention just before it was his go Then I'd skip to the table, spin him round and he would be like 'mummmm! Thank god I thought you weren't speaking to me!' (But only for about five wags... grin....)
There comes an age I think, where you just live with the fact they don't pound their tails Hot days are even worse, panting AND not wagging, SO attractive But in the end a good judge shouldn't factor in wagging unless they have two dogs of absolute even quality, so if they are so shallow as to overlook structural quality for a buzzy wagging tail then best knock them off your christmas card list I always thought
Hey ho. I miss that dog.
Di

Thanks Di,
Bax is just a non wagger too -I think. He sounds exactly like your Dylan used to be. I get a few wags and then he just stands and looks at me.
I'll try ignoring him for a while and see if that works!
I don't think I'll try fussing another dog as Bax is still very over exuberant as far as other dogs are concerned and would probably launch himself over me to jump on the other dog! Maybe thats why he doesn't wag his tail....... he thinking 'nasty mum stopping me from sniffing all the other dogs bums.....'
