They do go in and out of favour as some of the parasites can develop a resistance to the products that have been around for longer, which is what your vet was most likely getting at, and also the newer products tend to be developed to work on new parasites or at a different stage of the parasites life cycle. It's a complex area and not all products treat against all parasites and a lot of it can depend on what is common in your area of the country and also what your vet recommends.
Personally we use Stronghold at the moment as that is what our vet recommends in our area.
My vet explained it as Frontline has been around for too long now and doesn't kill the fleas anymore
I think you'd find Frontline would be very unhappy to hear that and would be booking a seat at the local courthouse!!!!!!
Here is something I wrote a little while ago.
Regards, John
Drontal Plus will cover all intestinal worms found here in the UK, but does not touch Heart/Lung worms, or anything else such as ticks or fleas.
It appears Panacur is fine for Round worms and Tape worms. It will eliminate Lungworm, but cannot be used as a preventative. To get rid of Lungworm it takes at least a week's course rather than a single dose.
Milbemax Like Panacur is a broad spectrum wormer which can also be used as a preventative for Lungworm, in normal doses. But again like Panacur needs high doses if the worm has become established. Milbemax should NEVER be used for Collie breeds, and can be a problem with other breeds, so needs monitoring (as any medication should be.)
Advocate can be used both as a preventative and cure, and is again a broad spectrum wormer and also controls fleas, ear mites sarcoptic mange and demodicosis, but to my knowledge does not touch Ticks or I think Tape worms.
Frontline controls fleas and ticks but does not touch worms.
So there you are. Nothing covers everything! So many people are now rotating what they use in an effort to cover the lot. But of course, that has risks. For example, Bayer, the manufacturers of Advocate would test all their products to ensure compatibility, but would be under no obligation to test against other manufacturers products. Most I’ve no doubt would be perfectly safe, but you are on your own without a lifebelt.
I use Advocate as Olly eats snails and slugs, he also gets a Droncit because as John said, Advocate doesn't cover tapeworms. The cat also gets Advocate and Droncit but less frequently as she's an indoor cat, it's just to cover her in case Olly brings her a little present.....!
We used to use Advocate and Droncit for tape worm but I didn't like Advocate as it seemed to stick to Tex's fur for ages so I moved to Frontline which was a 'bit' better and then I had to have Milbemax 3 monthly as a wormer too.
Advocate for me, as Charlie has certainly been known to eat snails and slugs, and would therefore be at risk of heartworm/lungworm if there is any around here. I use it every three or four months, so that I am hopefully not over-using artificial chemicals.
I also give mine a garlic tablet every morning with their breakfast, as I am told it can also be helpful at deterring fleas - they are supposed to dislike garlic flavoured dogs.
For all other worms, I use Drontal plus every three months.
