Hi,
What does everyone use?
We've always used the Frontline one for our cats and previous dog but our vets only sells Advocate which we have to get a prescription for and only lasts 4 weeks.
Is it ok to carry on using Frontline for Sophie or is Advocate what everyone uses now?
I use Frontline. I only use it a couple of times a year though, as I don't like covering my animals in chemicals more than necessary. I would use Advocate if we had a Lungworm (French Heartworm) problem in this area, or if my dogs ate snails (which transfer the Lungworm), as this is the only thing which kills them.
I don't like advocate (it's the new hills pet food from a marketing perspective for vets!)
I use frontline combo instead.
I use advocate only if my dogs are due a GA (as a precaution to 'treat' any lungworm as one of the effects of having lungworm can be excess bleeding).
I would use advocate if there had been cases of lungworm in my area though.
I think i'll carry on using the Frontline from now on then.
I've been feeling as though it's a marketing project for the vets as well, they all seam so persistant that you must only use Advocate now! They were telling my mum that Frontline isn't strong enough to kill fleas anymore
I use Advocate on Skittle coz she eats snails and has a problem with that, and Frontline on Mambo,Gypsy and any Fosters. I do use Advocate on Tigger Mog as he is impossible to worm with a tablet
George was on Advocate in the UK as we did have a lungworm problem (our neighbors dog had it).
Now we're in France, vet recommended Frontline Combi as it protects against ticks. We'll have to go on to separate wormer next month as Advocate wormed as well.
Just to add to the discussion, they also work in different ways.
My vet explained it to me in simple terms - I need simple terms
Frontline spreads across the skin and works from the outside.
Advocate is absorbed into the bloodstream and works from the inside out.
Apparently Frontline can be less effective if you have a real waterbaby, but I've never had a problem with it and Jet rarely gives himself time to dry out between swims
