Knowing what the little darlings are like for eating what they shouldn't, a list of things to be aware of:
Sweetcorn cobs – These cannot be digested in the stomach and can cause serious complications requiring urgent surgical removal if they cause a blockage in the intestines. They are particularly inviting to a lab when covered in butter and discarded after a barbecue!
Grapes – As few as five grapes have been documented to cause kidney failure in a Labrador! The same applies to raisins etc.
Chocolate – Human chocolate contains a substance which can rapidly cause death in dogs – NEVER feed it to your dog and if he is known to have eaten some contact your vet as soon as possible for advice. The same applies to chocolate cakes etc prepared using cocoa.
Cocoa Shell Mulch - Commonly used in the garden in place of bark chippings, NEVER use where there are dogs, it still smells and tastes of cocoa and has the same lethal effect!
Slug Pellets - THIS ONE IS LETHAL! If you must use them use a ‘pet friendly’ variety, your garden centre will advise you (crushed eggshell and grit are safer!). If you are visiting friends and taking your dog always check they do not use them in their garden.
Plants & bulbs:
Some will just cause a stomach upset, others more serious problems, to list but a few:
Bleach
Battery Acid
Motor Oil
Drain Cleaner
Fertilizer
Glue
Household Cleaners
Laundry Detergent
Turpentine
Plaster
Salt
Putty
Pine Cleaners
Paintbrush Cleaner
Nail Polish
Nail Polish Remover
Paint Thinner
Antifreeze
Acetaminophen (Tylenol)-Used in Chewing gum.
Insecticides
Household Cleaners (toilet bowl cleaners, pine oil cleaner, detergents.
Garden Fertilisers/Chemicals-Keep well out of reach
There are many substances, too many to mention here, which could cause your dog a serious problem, the advice is, as always,
Celine , that reminded me of our old Afghan, before the internet and loads of info, he used to clean up all the cobs at our BBQ's, and the scouts that used to have cook ups behind our house, then he would roll in the discarded fat, and come back stinking of burgers .
My friends large, mixed breed dog scavenged a corn cob without her knowledge. He became very ill over a few days and had to have it surgically removed. So I would say definitely to be avoided.
I know daffodil bulbs are poisonous, but what about daffodil leaves?
Becareful at the coast also, mum s lab hoovered up a crab on the beach and was very poorly. My daughter saw on internet where a lab puppy in USA had eaten a crab and started vomiting and was dead by evening, so be beach aware!!!
One evening Henry projectile vomited a bite of bone up he had swallowed a few seconds later he projectile vomited up a corn cob.....he had eaten 3 months earlier :O
