For anyone that might be interested, the AHT are monitoring seasonal canine illness and provide more info on a website here:
AHT SCI site
SCI is the illness of unknown origin effecting dogs walked in woodland during late summer into autumn.
You can sign up for alerts - hopefully this will give early indications of areas affected come late summer/autumn. I'll be signing up as two of the sites being monitored are in Norfolk.
My poor pup- Hope is very ill with a suspected case of this, as they don't know the cause they can only treat the symptoms and hope for a recovery.
There are many areas added to this, although most seem to be Norfolk and Nottinghamshire areas. Do look.
further point - my Hope was muzzled as she is a serial scavenger and still got it, vet thinks SCI may come from the soil, and Hope likes to nuzzle with her muzzle on. Please beware I would hate any dogs to become as ill as Hope has
Maria
All - can i ask would you still walk in the areas mentioned? We walked in thetford forest plenty last year. Next week we're off on hols and did plan a walk in sandringham, probably just the one walk there.
I'm all for getting on with life as normal but OTOH is it an un-necessary risk
Thanx for this I've signed up
I stayed clear of the notts area since the end of July because they didn't know the cause, but I had no idea the "danger" period was so long
It does make you quite concerned when your dogs show any signs of the problem after walks
