wave

I am in a quandry, Ruby is just 7 months old and is fed Burns. As per Burns guidelines I reduced Rubys feed from 20g per kg of body weight to 15g per kg of body weight at 6 months. Since I did this she hasnt gained any weight.

Ruby looks fine she is very lean and petite as she is working lines i cant see ribs but can feel etc etc. She weighs 16kg and has gained a steady half kilo every week since we got her (apart from the didgy tummy week when she remained the same)

What concerns me is that she hasnt gained any weight and I know at 7 months she should still be doing so - I emailed Burns and they said its fine for her to have stayed the same for 3 weeks but I think I should up her food a little.

What do you all think? How much Burns do you feed per guidelines or more?

Confused................................................................. ....

She looks great Vicky and had loads of energy, so I wouldn't worry that she's not getting enough.

Perhaps try upping it by a tiny bit and just see how she goes - you'll soon know if it's too much, although I really can't see Rubes getting chubby!

I tend to go more by eye now when changing Baxter's food - if he was fed what it said on the packet he'd be enourmous, so I just up it by a very small amount every few weeks and it seems to suit him. Trial and error seems to work if I go by very small 'trials', that way, if it's wrong it's not much to correct.

Hi Vicky,

I'd up her amount a bit and see how she goes. Maybe she has a higher metabolism than the average Lab. I don't think there's any chance of her getting fat Wink by giving her a bit more.

Does it upset her tummy if she has extra? I know it does some dogs. If it doesn't, then I'd gradually increase the amount until she has started to gain a reasonable amount of weight again and then stick with that.

Does she have any extras, tins of mackerel, chicken wings, that sort of thing. If she does, I wouldn't take anything off her normal allowance at the moment either.

She's an active girlie, she probably is just using up what you are giving her and has very little left over for growing.

Jules.

yeah she has liver treats erm about 4-5 thumb nail chunks a day and 1-2 carrots and sometimes a kong which i dont take out of her allowance but i think the GT on sunday would have burned up loads too wouldnt it.

Dont know about extra food as never tried it but I dont deduct her wednesday night training treats out of her allowance either so yes i suppose she does already get extra with no detrimental effect. HAs eaten curry powder at 10 weeks with now explosions either so i kind of assume she is quite hardy of stomach.

I will up her from 240g - 260g a day and see think that sounds about right to up it by?

thanks guys

Majic is on more than the guidelines and always has been as she has a higher metabolism. Very Happy

At 9 months she was on 12 ozs Burns and she was 22kg in weight but her weight started slowing down then and she hasn't gained much since, I think she is taking her dad's genes as he was working line and very lean.

Try upping it a bit and see how she goes, I also add sardines in tomato sauce twice a week as treat for her but only just started this and haven't weighed her yet to see if her weight has increased. Confused

I just weighed Baxter and he has only put on 1/2 a kilo in the last 3 weeks too.

Did a bit of googling and it says lab pups hit 80% of their adult weight at 8 months and growth slows dramatically there!
