I don't post very often but just wanted to say that we very sadly lost Treacle last Thursday evening. I am absolutley devastated and have not been able to post about it until today.
On Wed she was fine in the morning before I went to work and seemed happy in herself, she then went out for her walk at lunchtime with my Mum and was fine until about an hour after she got back when she was sick 3 times and stood very heavily breathing and in alot of pain and was struggling to stand so my mum rushed her to the vets and they gave her a pain relief injection and and injection to stop her being sick. She then came home and was still weak and lay with my Mum all afternoon until tea time when she wouldn't eat so my Mum phoned the vets and told her to bring Treacle down again.
I came home from work and she looked very old and unwell and we took her down to the vets. They gave her another good examination especially of her abdomen and she showed no signs of discomfort. She had become dehydrated so they decided to keep her in and put her on a drip and run some blood tests as they were suspecting pancreatitis. Her bloods came back pretty much normal with nothing scary which was a relief however she was still puzzling the vets.
We rang on Thurs morning and they told us she was much brighter and had eaten some breakfast and they wanted to monitor throughout the day but she should hopefully be able to come home later and they would ring us between 4 and 5pm.
They rang us back and she had gone downhill again and not eaten anything at lunch or tea so they wanted to keep her in overnight again. Then another vet had come onto the night shift and at 7pm we got a phonecall saying that she had gone very flat and she wanted to do ultrasound and xrays otherwise the vet wouldn't be able to settle leaving her overnight. She then rang back saying she had found a mass in her stomach and they were going to operate.
They opened her up and discovered she had a large perforated ulcer in her stomach with lots of internal bleeding and it was infected into her intestines and there was nothing they could do and said it would be kinder to put her to sleep. So they kept her under general anaesthetic and we went to say goodbye and stayed with her while she took her last breath.
It all happened so quick and was totally unexpected. The most likely cause was the metacam she had been on for her bad arthritis in her hocks and elbows. She was on this from June until October when she started being sick daily so she was changed to Previcox which she seemed good on with very ocassional sickness which was actually due to her having something different in her diet or pinching apples from the garden. We had managed to get her to half dose of Previcox along with seraquin supplements and weekly hydrotherapy and she was the best she had ever been and quite bouncy these last few months and enjoying life to the full.
The vet said the ulcer had been going on for a long time and that the Metacam was the most likely cause and if she was a human they would have been in hospital weeks ago complaining but Treacle was such a brave and stoic girl that we had no idea this was going on inside her, if only she had let us know earlier then things might be different now.
We have only had her 2 and half years as she was a rescue ex brood bitch and she was the most loving, sweet girl that was so gratefull and was her happiest when swimming or playing with a ball. She was great with Bovril and Bamboo who have been very quiet since she went to the bridge.
We will miss her very very much and will always have a very special place in our hearts xxx
Sorry for the long post and lots of pictures. Here are some pictures of Treacle enjoying her last few years:
Enjoying her Jacuzzi two weeks before she died
At our carravan we have only just bought and unfortunatley she only got to enjoy twice
Absolutely tragic and heartbreaking, I am so so sorry x

What a devastating story, it has brought me to tears. I am so sorry for your loss. Treacle looks like the 2.5 years she had with you made her very happy, she was such a lovely girl
I`m so sorry to hear about Treacle, what a shock for you losing her so quickly, I know its still very raw for you at the moment but once the pain has easeed, you`ll be able to remember her with a smile, you have her the best time of her life after having been a breeding girl.
I'm so sorry to hear about poor Treacle Kim, you must be in a daze.I read your post with tears in my eyes but as I scanned down your beautiful photos of her I felt so happy to see what a wonderful life she had with you. As a breeding dog she would never have been able to swim, walk on the beach, play in the snow and there would certainly have been no jacuzzi. It's so sad that her time with you was so short but what a life you gave her.
