Hi
This is Carrie - my husband just told me he had registered on the forum as well, so I thought I'd pop on to let you what has happened with little Bo.
After taking him with his breeder to another vet for a second opinion on his heart problem, it was agreed that he would go back to the breeder. They are lovely people who really loved the pups and were committed to getting Bo the best care possible. They came and got him on Friday evening. I told my girls on Friday afternoon...lots of tears, lots of cuddles. By now, Bo seemed to be sleeping ever such a lot, and he was very happy to curl up on the sofa with the four of us girls.
Anyway, he went back with his breeders and had what seemed to be a good night on Friday and a good day with his mum on Saturday. A third vet once again said it was best not to give him his jabs, but they were pleased with his potty training and how well he'd come on with several commands.
Today, he seemed to be very uncomfortable and had no energy. They took him to the vet and asked for some pain relief, which he had. A short time later, when he was still suffering, they made the very sad decision to let him go. Bo passed away a couple of hours ago.
To be honest, in a way I am relieved. All weekend I've been in turmoil, wondering if we had done the right thing, feeling guilty and a huge sense of loss. Now I know we did the right thing - if nothing else it would have been hellish for him to have my three little ones messing with him when he was feeling so poorly. I'm also relieved that the end came swiftly and that neither he nor his breeders had an extended period of pain, poor quality of life or expensive and time-consuming care.
Rob and I are certain that if we are to have a dog in our lives, we would like it to be a Labrador. We are considering adding our names to the rescue labs list.
Thanks again for all your replies before, and I really do hope we are back as subscribing members before too long.
Kind regards,
Carrie and family
Oh that's so sad and I really feel for you all. I read the original post and hoped the breeder would take him back for you. Sometimes life can be cruel but there is always a reason behind it. Bo is in a happy place and you can move on and make another dog equally happy as I'm sure you did for Bo.
Hi Carrie, welcome to LF, I`m sorry it had to be in such sad circumstances, I remember your OH posting about Bo last week, I`m so sorry to hear he has gone but as you say it was the right decision for him.
I hope that you and your family will be able to come to terms with his loss, really you`ve lost him twice, with handing him back to the breeder and then him being put to sleep.
Good luck in your search for a rescue, the Forum can help with that too, we have many members who have adopted rescue dogs, some have ex breeding bitches, if you look in the top left of the page you`ll see random pics of labs in rescue, there`s also a database where it tells you a bit about the dog and which rescue is caring for it.
I am sorry to hear about Bo, but you and the breeder made the right decision for him. Good luck with your search for a rescue lab. As an owner of two rescues I can highly recommend it.
