Hi

I have an 8 week old puppy but he isn't drinking water. Is this normal? He eats his food (3 meals a day) and drinks milk quite happily. I've also just started mixing some dry small Pedigree mix in with his wet food and he loves it! I always leave water out but he never touches it.

Does anyone know why this is?

thanks!

Firstly welcome to the forums!! Very Happy

Secondly Alfie didn't drink alot when i first got him but i was adding water to his food so i knew he was getting water.

Sorry i don't really have any advice but hopefully someone will be along soon to help.

Not sure if Bailey's too young but i use to give Alfie ice cubes just to keep his fluid intake up a little, might be worth a try.

Anyway Good luck Smile

If you feed him wet food, thats probably why hes not drinking much.
I wouldn't worry about it much. It could also be due to the pup still being a little confused and overwhelmed with his new family and home. Leave his water out like your already doing. He may be taking sips when your not looking.

Hi, welcome to LF Smile , I would suggest not giving Bailey milk, some pups can be intolerant to cows milk and it tends to make them fat. ATM he`ll be getting the fluids he needs from the milk and the wet food you feed him.

Best to give him his food and maybe add a little water to it, also leave the water out for him as normal, he`ll soon learn that its for drinking Smile

Thank you - anything is worth a try and as long he's getting enough water. It may be that he's still used to his mother's milk maybe.

Hi

Just to add about the milk again- dogs should not have cows milk, if you want to give them milk goats milk is the best for them.
Like the others have suggested add water to his meals and just leave the water bowl down and he will learn where it is .

Barley didnt drink much at all when she 1st came home. I used to top up her dry food with boiled water and let it cool so that I knew she was getting fluids. She laps up her water now.

Thank you so much for all your comments. I'm new to all this forum stuff and this is my first dog although my husband has owned a few. Anyway, he eventually convinced me that a dog would be great. I didn't realise that there was a whole computer world to go with him too! Laughing

I feel that there's lots of help out there if I need it along the way. I now have to figure out how to get a picture of Bailey on this forum - hopefully of him drinking water!!

Thanks again

Hi Lesley and Bailey Very Happy

I just wanted to let you know that I used to feel my dog on Burns, which is a dry food. She used to drink plenty of water, particularly when she came into season!!! Anyway, I introduced Chappie (wet food) mixed in with her Burns and she never seems to drink out of her bowl anymore. I end up throwing it away as its full of dust, fluff and dirt!!! I think she must get adequate water from the wet food. Hope this helps.
