Thank you all for your help, advice and recommendations...
I think I will going with VetMediCover. I like to one price fits all approach and an annual £10,000 limit is very good indeed. I will be studying all the small print over the next few days, just to ensure there are no "funnies", so fingers crossed!!
Once again, many thanks - would never have find VetMediCover if it wasn't for you guys..
One thing I can tell you is in the small print is that your dog must be up to date with all vaccinations & yearly boosters. Not all insurence companies insist on this and I know some people feel yearly boosters are unnecessary.
Lifetime policies mean different things with different companies.
Direct Line advanced cover gives up to £6000 for any condition over the lifetime of the dog, you only pay one excess per condition.
Other companies will pay up to a set amount each year in total, combining all problems, they probably charge an excess for each condition and will often charge another excess for each year that you claim for any condition.
I'm with Direct Line and fortunately my vet deals direct with them. My last two claims were processed within a couple of weeks with no problems but I have a claim in at the moment since mid November and I am not aware that they have paid up yet. Fortunately it is the vet they owe and not me. They warned me when I put the claim in that it would take 6-8 weeks but that was before the bad weather and the holidays were added to the equation.
I sorted out my puppies insurance the other week...i went on "go compare" and found a company called "animal friends". I went for the lifetime insurance package and it was really good value and cheaper than pet plan (even though they were exactly the same!).
I don't have to pay anything to the vets if Bailey has to have treatment, they liaise with the insurance company and sort everything out.
its a mindfield.
I think many of us would have a shock if we looked deep into car insurance as well.
I get a discount with m and s but even then seems a lot. Great point about insuring while breeder 4 weeks was going. I would never of thought of that.
Please keep us up to date with the vetmedic one sound good. I will be starting my insurance soon after pup gets home. Just be my luck for something awlful to happen.
Whoever you decide to go with, you need to be prepared to stick with them forever at the same level of cover. Once you have anything on your vetinary record it becomes a "pre-existing condition" even if you don't make a claim. No other company will cover this condition if you then decide to change, nor will they let you upgrade your cover to lifetime if it was previously a 12 month policy.
I looked at vetmedicover and didn't like the fact that you need to call for a 'pre-treatment authorisation code' so could end up having to wait on them before the dog receives any treatment. Also there's no mention of them on 'which' so disregarded them. Thats not to say they're not a good insurer and the code is given quickly, just wasn't for me.
Sainsburys, John Lewis, and Argos looked best IMO and are all high on 'Which' recommendation list.
Personally, I've decided to go for Argos Platinum. £7K per year, no time limit for ongoing conditions, £65 excess and £20.32 per month.
