I have a 9 week old lab puppy and it's just his 4th day with us. The breeder told us to feed him Bakers Complete Puppy food as that is what he had been feeding him. I am new to owning a puppy so I didn't realise that Bakers has such negative reviews. I wish I had known! So we have been feeding Rory the Bakers and literally as soon as he has eaten he seems to go crazy! He is very bitey at the minute which I am told is completely normal for a pup but after eating he is even more so and he seems to have a ridiculous amount of energy. He was running round the garden in circles yesterday! My friend suggested looking at his food and I have done a lot of research now and have seen how many people are against Bakers. Looking on the packet I can see all the additives! There are 15 e numbers in it!!! I can't understand how this is even allowed to be sold! I have bought the JWB puppy food now and am trying to switch it over. Is it right that it is best to keep with the Bakers but add a little of the JWB at a time? Would it be too much to do half and half? I just want him off the Bakers!!

Others may disagree, but if he were mine I would move him straight to a new food and leave the Bakers behind.

I have generally moved all our new rescue dogs, including two puppies + a foster pup, straight to Naturediet and never had a problem Smile

To me, being a cheapskate, I'd not throw it away. I'd mix it until I'd used it up.

But I have to say, at 9 weeks old, you may well find no change. Obviously I cant see him but most Labrador puppies are VERY active.

Regards, John

We pick our pup on the 25th and the breeder have them on...

Purina Pro Plan Puppy - Large Breed Athletic Lamb & Rice

What are peoples thoughts of this grub, okay rubbish?

We want to feed him decent food (but are not rich) one which is not full of rubbish...

On average how long would a 15kg bag last on a pup, having 4 feeds a day?

If the Pro Plan is naff, what would be a decent alternative...?

Thanks Smile

Well at first I'd really say keep him on the same food to avoid any tummy troubles as he'll already have lots of changes to deal with then if you decide to change do it in a couple of weeks time.

It depends if the food suits him to be honest if it ain't broke don't fix it is a good mantra! Not all foods suit all dogs.

This is the info on the food (copied from Viovet)
Ingredients: Lamb (19%), maize, dehydrated poultry protein, maize gluten meal, rice (9%), animal fat, maize flour, digest, dehydrated salmon protein, beet pulp, dried egg, wheat, calcium phosphate, fish oil, potassium chloride, sodium chloride, minerals, L-Lysine, colostrum, DL-Methionine.

Antioxidant: Tocopherol (rich extracts of natural origin).

Vitamins: Vitamin A: 15000 IU/kg, Vitamin D3: 750 IU/kg, Vitamin E: 170 mg/kg, Vitamin C: 70 mg/kg, B Group vitamins: 200 mg/kg, Taurine: 1000 mg/kg.

Typical Analysis: Protein 32.0 %, Oil 17.0 %, Ash 7.0 %, Fibre 2.0 %, Calcium 1.2%, Phosphorus 1.0 %, DHA 0.05%

14kg bag - £40.93

I think if I was looking to change from that I'd only look at the Skinners or Burns range as anything like Orijen will be an awful lot more expensive. But as I say if the pup was happy and healthy on the purina I wouldn't change anyway because food is a minefield and what's right for one isn't for another and you don't want to get into tummy trouble territory it's tricky to fix and you can always change when you go onto adult food to a different brand as you'll be changing then anyway.

It was switching Luna onto Purina Salmon and Rice at about 9months -ish that settled her tum, sorted out her weight (she'd been gaining too much) and she liked it!!! I only switched her onto Skinners Salmon because it was more readily available locally, was cheaper and I recognised the ingredients in the list!

Paws has given you some great advice - if you have a look in the diet section you'll find that every dog has different needs and once you find out what suits them - phew!!! Very Happy

It's difficult to know how long a bag of pup food will last as the amount they will need will increase as they do in size depending on what the feeding guide says. As an adult mine get fed a lot less than it says on the packet so that they don't gain too much weight but pups need to gain weight so until about 6months ish I fed what the guide said. To give you a rough-ish idea, Luna gained approx a kg a week-ish!!!

Thanks guys for the input Smile

Of course i wasn't just going to take him off it straight away, i was just concerned it was full of rubbish and by looking at the ingredients seems to be a lot of stuff in there i've not head of. Sad

So perhaps after a few weeks we might try Skinners, as seems to be reasonable and not read anything bad about it so far...

What are the tips in regard to building up a strong stomach, so he can eat almost anything without an upset.

Introducing different things now and again? Veg, porridge etc? What do people include to help their tums get stronger as they grow up...?

Thanks again Smile
