This is a thread to give the showing newcomers, of which there seems to be quite a few lately which is great for the sport, it needs some younger folks diving in, a little hope! Now I'm not a great handler by any means but I did improve a little over the years since this 'happened' but....:
.... At my first dog show, I knelt beside my dog and stacked it like a Golden Retriever, including holding its tail out horizontally. That in itself is not a bad thing, if you are showing a GOLDEN RETRIEVER.... But I was showing a Labrador !!!
I got a few strange looks (which, of course, went straight over my head seen as I was at everyones knee level) and finally, after everyone nearly falling over me as they started off to move round the ring, someone from the ring ropes hissed at me, 'Labradors are shown with you standing UP dear!!!'
So I stood up, and turned to face him... and my good old working dog sat. So I pushed him backwards to get him to stand up, straight into the back of the legs of the pretty aged lady showing a dog behind him. She turned and gave me a FILTHY stare. Especially when it happened a second time! She was convinced I was trying to knobble her I'm sure! I got about four seconds of a decent 'stand' out of the dog, all of which, of course was NOT whilst the judge was actually looking at him, and we took the walk of shame....alone.... the HUGE walk of shame when there are 6 in the ring and only 5 places....and only one person walking...
That, I rememeber was at Woking Lesiure Centre in 1995, and it was lovely to judge there recently to complete the 'circle' of 'hopeful! improvement
The dog is question DID learn to stand in the end (Although NEVER wag his tail at the same time, and can you blame him with me at the other end of him...?)
... and I DID end up going to ringcraft (although why I practiced on park benches is beyond me - the craziness of youth!!)
But what I want to know is what did YOU do at your first show that will make you curl your toes forever....!!

PS: This could so easily be a thread in FT & Hunting called 'At my first Working Test I....' (Cried) or 'At my first Field Trial I....' (Cried again) ..... or even 'At my first commercial posh shoot I....' (Yep, you've guessed it, 'Fell in a ditch and... yes.... heartily sniffed!....)

At my first dog show Gillie jumped into the agility ring and pulled me off my chair! He also sat down in the dog with the waggiest tail class. Ok so we are not quite at the same level as Di!
At my first dog show I got really nervous, the dog threw up in the ring and I walked out in tears.........I was about 14 and never done anything like that before.
At my first obedience dog show I was so nervous I forgot not only my name, but also that of the super handsome dog that I was with........thankfully he knew his job and wiped the floor with the other dogs (as in we won the class) job done!
Thats a RUBBISH story!!! Surely it bit the judge, slipped its lead and caused a pile up in the car park, mated an inseason Siberian Husky and chewed through your belt so your trousers fell down in the middle of BIS?????
!!! Must try harder....

I'm starting to have second thoughts about going to a dog show with you.....
Oh this was painfully embarrassing for both me and Basil.
At my first dog show we were called into the bitches ring.
It all went very well I thought (or at least not massively different to the other people I watched, as that's all I had to go on), he stood nicely, wagged politely, we strutted our little lines. As the only english lab entered (in singapore) even with a white flash it would have been a mockery if we didn't do 'ok', the SKC give pedigree certs not just by parentage but by viewing litters after all
Then we all leave the ring and a few are due to get called back in.
One of the ladies pulls me to one side and says you and your dog are 1 of the 3 to go back in.
Whoop whoop happy days.
Then another grabs my arm and says 'no, no, that's a dog'. Yes says I, a dog, in my best speak slow and clear for the no-speakedy-english lady.
No, this was bitches she says.
She went on to say she'd directed us in accidentally because he looked like a female.
It would have been not too bad to have escaped at the ringside, but the lady in the middle of the ring was waiting and beckoning us in and so the crowd was watching.
We tried to style it out and walked away but I reckon people must have though we had stage fright.
We didn't enter the dogs ring in any case and therafter we just went to watch the shows even though later, post dangleberry-off op he really could have won in the bitches ring I'm sure.
Oh dear, mortifying, at my first international dog show (no less) my dog has a perfect bite but lacks 6 premolars - a fault in France! Boydid I feel like a totla numpty!
Well I don't do the handling at shows, it's my grandson Ashley, who was 13 at the time. It wasn't his first show either but was one of the funniest. Before we set off to shows I go through the whole' have you remembered this, are you wearing that' routine. We got to the Three Ridings Champs Show at the beginning of this year and Ashley goes into the ring with Martha, seems to be having a little trouble with his trousers as the judge is going over her. The reason becomes apparent as he moves her up and down the ring - he'd forgotten his belt and will be forever known as the boy who almost mooned at the judge and all the other competitors
I had to borrow a slip lead to use as a belt to preserve his decency for the rest of the show
