Hi Holly has very itchy sore skin only releived by steroids and is waiting to see a specialist, she is currently fed on Skinners sensitive food (chicken and rice) but i am considering changing to something different ie JWB what do you people with dogs with similar problems use as i really don't want her to be on regular steroids
Thanx

Hi

I have a Holly too and was in the Pets at Home in Stirling yesterday and the girl i spoke with has a Golden Retriever with very bad skin, she says that JWB is the only thing he can eat due to his very bad skin condition she gives him ever now and then a little packet of the wet food as a treat and because its JWB id doesnt flare up. I was in asking about weaning onto another food thats not as expensive as JWB and so she gave me a sample of Wainwrights which is PAH own stuff she said that they are both the same have the same qualities she has kept her dog on JWB because he is about 4 i think she said and has always been on it but she said that the Wainwrights would do for her too. SO i guess what im saying is personally my pup hasnt got any conditions with skin but hers did and she swears by it she says they are Hypo allergenic etc etc for a 15kg bag of JWB its £47 and for Wainwrights its £33. They gave me a free bag 2kg to try out so perhaps you could get it to try it and see how he goes with it

Hope that helps xx

Have you tried adding Salmon Oil and / or Yumega Plus to her diet? I use Salmon Oil for mine as the norm - and have heard of some good results with Yumega Plus.

http://www.lintbells.com/page/yumega-plus

As for the dog food - it's a difficult one without knowing what she may be sensitive to.

I tried my four eldest dogs on Chappie dried - primarily because money was tight at the time, but they have done so well on it, I am now sticking with it.

The two youngsters are on Pro-Plan and I believe the Pro-Plan sensitive is supposed to be very good for sensitive skin.

George had very itchy skin and was losing his hair in places. I switched him to JWB and itching stopped completely after a few weeks. I did have him allergy tested which showed he had many allergies, most of them food but with hindsight I wish I had just switched his food first.

Is there a particular flavour of JWB which seems better for sensitive skin or are they all ok.

It's not easy if you don't know what she is sensitive too, but if you're already used to Skinner's I know their Salmon & Rice products has helped a lot of dogs.

Fish4dogs can be excellent for dogs with skin problems as its very high in Omega plus it is literally just fish and potato. Burns is another one with minimal different ingredients.

Hi Carole.Just to say Dylan is undergoing tests at the mo for skin allergy.A couple of months ago vet recommended I put him on JWB Junior with lamb and rice and I must say that so far he doesn't seem to be scratching as much.I also have him on Omega 3 fish oil capsules with evening primrose oil - 4 per day and I really think this is helping as well and I notice also his coat is looking better as well.HTH

My friend has her ultra sensitive Cocker on Royal Canin Sensitivity Diet which is only whiting and tapioca. She is great on it.

I echo what Sue says about the Salmon Oil. Lottie has Kronch and has no flaky skin and a fabulous coat together with very minimal moulting (compared to the other labs I walk)

Good luck with finding a food which will help.

Barbara xx
