It is very sad to hear of this sort of thing. I suppose the only slight consolation is that the poor boy is now released from whatever suffering was making him behave like that.
Maybe he had been ill-treated and neglected. Maybe there was something medically wrong with him that could not be diagnosed in time to treat. Maybe both of those.
Run free boy. Relaxed and happy at the bridge now.
You do a great job for rescue dogs, Natalie. For labs and for many other breeds/crossbreeds. You can't totally harden to it. Only to an certain extent to allow you to cope in most instances. Most good vets or human doctors I have ever known say that whilst they learn to cope in some ways with giving bad news, they are never become totally used to it. There are still cases which get to them sometimes. I am sure many animal rescuers would say the same. You won't be alone.
