OK, I know the majority (if not all Wink ) of this problem is ME! and I am determined to change my ways! Especially now that I know Carly has slight HD in both hips!

Carly was wieghed today, and she came in at 39kg, so she has put on another .5 kg since before I went away.

The Vet suggested Royal Canin Obesity (we've tried Hills HD to no affect), has anyone used this, they say they offer a money back gaurantee!!!!

I am going to book her in for some Fitness Fun at my local Hydrotherapy Pool (they do 11 sessions for the price of 10, or used to)..

I am going to split her meals into 3 a day, and reduce the amount again.

I am not going to buy any more treats, it will be carrot or chicken bits from here..

While Im not working we (as I put on nearly a stone while away) will do 3 half hour walks a day during the week (at least 2 on lead, as thats better for wanting to lose wieght/fitness isnt it?).

When(?!) she does start losing the wieght what sort of target should I go for on a weekly/monthly basis (going to go back to the Vets Fat Club each month)...

If I fail, I was also thinking of booking a dog-sitter (with strong wills) for a week.. or a Fat Camp for Dogs ??????

Any other tips/advice greatly appreciated ...

Sharon

Oops ...It just sneaks on when you're not looking, doesn't it Laughing .

I've never tried any diet/light type foods so I can't comment on them. I'd watch out giving her carrots (all sugary carbs) and even chicken as treats though, as even a little of those will make a difference.

I tend to bulk up their food with green veg (runner beans/cabbage) if they are on stricter rations, as at least then they feel full, but there are precious few calories in the veg.

On-lead walks are only good if you keep the pace up but 2 x 30 mins of her trotting briskly will be quite a work out for her, so you might want to build up to that rather just go for it, as it might make her sore and stiff otherwise.

I'd look for a slow but steady weight loss, just like what's best for us humans. 1kg off per month would be plenty, I'd say.

Tubbs was rather a large girl when I got her so I put her on a diet of a small mug of kibble (JWB) at the time, twice a day & it worked don't know what she weighed to start with but she looked like a tank.

She is now a slim girl at 31kgs she's showbred Very Happy
Took about 3 months

Bear who is slim build was 28kgs when he was diagnosed with HD I had to get him down to 25/26 kgs took 2 months on the same diet.
He is only allowed a 20 min lead walk a day.
Vet wanted me to get science plan lite but I just cut down his JWB.

Good luck, you just have to ignore the pleading eyes Laughing

How much kibble is she currently fed over her two feeds and which variety / brand?

Do you live in a hilly area or dead flat?

Di

Thanks all Smile
Di she's on Arden Grange light and gets 180x2 (so 360 a day) reduced from recommended intake of 420-450 I think?

If I have any looking a bit too "chuncky" and when my show bred boy was found to have HD and severe arthritus in one back leg I just cut the kibble down by half and bulked up the portion with veggies. The weight drops off slow but sure and it has stayed off and he now is looking fab, so are all of the girls! and I have increased his kibble back to 3/4 of what he used to have.

I think Arden grange are quite generous with their portions as any dog on arden grange that boards with us, only has a tiny amount to look right, two dobbies we have on AG are positively fat, and they go by the recommended quantity.

So cut your kibble down or change to JWB, bulk it up with veggies and walk as much as you can!!!!! No need for expensive diet food!

Now if only I could be so good myself!!!!!! lol

Trace x

Oh and Swindon/Wiltshire is pretty flat in general...

I think I started going wrong when she was about 12/18 months (she's 4 now) - as I thought I was doing good by giving a PC Dentastix once a day for her teeth - it wasnt until about a year later that i was informed by the vet of the amount of calories in them Sad

So about 12 months ago I swapped to low fat RICE CAKES (which she loves).

Have just checked the AG website and their recommended intake for the LIGHT for a 30-35 kg (which is where i'd like Carly to be/think she should be) is 385-425kg a day - so as i dont really want to go down the specialist food route if I can help it - I will reduce it to 150(x2) and bulk it out with Veg and give her, her Low Fat Rice Cake at Lunchtime..
And as i feed her, I know this is all my fault, so I will stop the titbits/treats, and when out walking, will take some of her kibble with me..

thanks again all
sharon

I think the 300g you've suggested above is a good level to start on, Basil is 30-32kg and is maintained on 300g regardless off what brand that is really.

You coud get some cheap scales and weigh out her full amount properly each morning, just for a while. Then take her kibble for walks etc from that.

At times when you would have treated her to something to much on at home pop her in the garden for a quick game of fetch or something instead maybe?
