Hi there
Do you think Rufus is overweight? Have been reading lots of old threads about weight and they seem to vary alot. Rufus is 7 months old and weighs 29.3kgs, which is more than the other lab puppies we meet. His ribs are covered in a thick blanket (not duvet) of lovelyness but i can still feel them. I have always reduce his food by a third so I can give him treats for training and am very mean and don't let him have titbits. When I boil his chicken I save the water, let it cool and then freeze it in a Kong which he loves and am hoping it cant be that bad for him. He loves his rawhide bones but I don't know how bad they are for him and one good sized one lasts most of the week. He gets his full quota of exercise a day as well as training and playing with my 4 kids.
do you think he's a bit overweight?? I really dont want to put any extra pressure on his growing joints through me getting it wrong. Didn't know if I should go to adult food now but the packet says change at 12months?
My vet runs a weight/ diet clinic so will take him along but it's not for a couple of weeks and I wondered what everyone else thinks?
Thanks in advance
If anything he looks a little on the slim side but still healthy. Try not to get too concerned about weight. Labs come in different shaped and sizes.
Dogs grow at different rates as do humans.
He looks fine to me.
He looks fine to me, Bailey is seven months also and weighs in at 31.4kg at the moment, he also has a duvet rather than a blanket, however, I think he is fine and so does my vet so I wouldn't worry.
Thank you for the reassurance. Rufus is about 5 kgs heavier than all the other labs in our class and I try not to compare as he's happy and active but someone was told theirs was overweight and they weighs 6kgs less than Rufus and isn't more than an inch shorter. He looks slimmer in the photos than he does in the flesh but he's not massively fatter. Try not to be an over worried first time mum but I read / was told so much about not over feeding your dog before I got him it's made me a bit paranoid.
He has a "waist" in those pics and as you can feel his ribs through his fur then he`s not overweight, for some reason a lot of vets seem to have a thing about Labs being overweight
Think youre right about vets, Watching his weight was the first thing I was told by the vet when rufus had his injections. The puppy at school doesn't have a waist so that might be why theyve been told shes overweight, Not sure who told them that either. Trying not to be paranoid but at times it hard.
He looks fine to me too.
He's a similar build to Cody, but weighs more so I guess he's taller.
I changed to adult food at about 7 months, I know some people on here don't feed puppy food at all so it's not a problem
I'd probably put him on adult food next time you buy a bag too. I changed Luna at about 9months but wished I'd changed earlier. She had got a bit heavy eating the puppy food once she'd reached what I now realised was about her adult size.
He looks great to me..very slim. Solly weighed 37kg at 9-10 months but dropped back to 35kg by a year. The vet thought he was just right ( our vet hasn't once mentioned labs and their weight....not yet anyway ) Now at 19months he's still 35kg and we've recently upped his food a bit as we started to see a bit of rib.
The labs on here all seem to vary greatly in size or shape so the right weight for yours will always be an individual thing
