Hi
I know I amnew here and keep posting asking for advice
My three year old lab has been diagnosed with a possible food allergy. To be honest I feel really gulity as concentrating so much on my other labs health (he has HD) i never noticed hers until it got really bad.
She licks her feet red raw and all the fur is disappearing. I took her to the vets and he said the feet licking is typical for a food allergy. He doesn't know exactly what but has given a few suggestions.
I need to change her food. She was on Arden Grange (thought I was doing right) to James Wellbeloved. Does anyone have any experience with this new food? I know it is hypoallergenic but so was the Arden Grange that is why I thought I was doing right putting her on that.
The vet has put her on steroids for 5 days and wants me to try her on the new food straight away.
Anyone any experience of having a dog with food allergies and knows the best course of action?? Is there anything else I can do to help??
Sorry I know I am posting here having just joined, please ignore me if I am being too cheeky
No - you're not being cheeky at all - thats the whole point of the forum - to share infomation etc.
I'm a bit surprised that the vet has diagnoised food allergy and advised changing to Burns so quickly. Could it possibly be a contact allergy? I'm only asking because my Dachi gets itchy feet (and under-carriage but then he's very low-slung!) on a seasonal basis so I'm pretty sure its down to certain grasses etc. I use piriton when its at its worst and put sudocream on any hot-spots.
I did have a lab who was tested for food allergies and the results were that he was allergic to most things. This was after a long period of illness when he was about 3 years old (he'd been fine until then) I had to put him on boiled fish and potaotes for 6 weeks with nothing else and then gradually add other ingredients at 2 weekly intervals. It was very disheartening and it didn't improve until I took him to a homeopathic vet who 'cured' him in one session. He then was able to eat anything!
I'm sure others can give you better advice. Hope it gets sorted,
Becs and the Gang
Oooh that is actually a good point. I didn't think of it being seasonal. She does plod around on grass and also eats it (with much discouragement from me)
I was thinking along the lines of a homeopathic vet.
never be scared to ask questions on here thats how we all learn.
ive been around labs for 50+ years and still ask questions and gain great advice from other members on here
Hi,Sorry to hear about your 3 year old.I have a dog with Food Allergies/Intollerance,we are currently on an elimination diet.My dog is a different boy on the diet as his allergies/intollerance has made him have behavioural problems(he also has OCD Bilateral Elbow Dysplasia and Arthritis) which have improved so much on his diet .I was told he also had environmental issues and the past 2 weeks I can see what the Dermatologist means. The pollen trees and flowers are affecting him .I walk him in Royden Park and have to keep an eye on his behaviour after the route we take..eg is he scratching more on a certain path or if he goes into a dirty puddle or does he get hyper.I have tried every food on the universe including James Wellbeloved and Arden Grange but nothing worked for him,but as the Dermatologist said Dylan is not a text book case .I will not put Dylan on steroids, although my other dogs had no side effects Dylan does.Depending on the problems your dog suffers there are quite a few things you can do to help.Getting a referral to a dermatologist was the best thing for Dylan, but your vet may not think that is the right road for your dog.I wish you luck as it's not an easy having a dog with such problem whether they may be seasonal or not.Lynne.
ohhh this post has got me thinking. For a few weeks now Stormy has been having James wellbeloved as treats. Only because we were given a bag when we did our kennel club bronze. I am wondering if that may be why stormy is licking his feet. I did put him on James wellbeloved as a pup, but it gave him diahorrea and he had to go onto the ID from the vets. Last xmas I tried him on Burns and he was fine with that, so I have stuck to it.

Hi my dog has environmental allergies and food allergies.
I changed his food to walfcol salmon and potato from recommendation of dermatologist, got rid of his duvet, and he is a different dog no more itching or chewing. Although alot of food claim to be hypoallergenic some arent, wafcol is just salmon and potato no miaze barley gluten colourings, have a look at www.wafcol.co.uk, great food.
Thanks Pam, I will check out the link, but I don't think it was the burns the problem. He has now been to the vet and had surgery and they think it is where something went in his paw. I have now also got some herbal and homepathic medicines and creams for him. One claims to stop the lick cycle. I don't know if it will work, but I am going to give them a go once his sore on his paw has healed up. He is on antibiotics at the moment, but he is looking good and today we got our first outing to the park again. Back for a check up at vets on Thursday, but things are looking good.
If you think it's seasonal it could be harvest mites - tiny blighters invisible to the eye (my eyes anyway). I use frontline spray on Cocos paws and it works a treat.
