The free insurance from the breeder is usually through the kennel club and it used to be for 6 weeks but now I believe it is only for 4. Then you have the option of staying with the Kennel Club's very expensive insurance or choosing one of your own. However, many people have fallen foul of the exemption rules whilst covered by the free insurance and have found that a minor problem mentioned to the vet during the free period has led to exclusions later on eg. a minor rash or a stomach upset in the first couple of weeks that a puppy is with you can mean that all skin problems or all digestive problems can be excluded from any new policies.

I would just go for a good insurance policy with a reputable company as soon as possible but some companies won't insure before 10 or 12 weeks.

Oh is it usually with the KC, I didn't realise (mine are all rescues). We've been given free Petplan insurance with the last two rescue dogs we've adopted, so we've just continued with them.

Two of mine are with Axa, vet fees £7000 per year, lifetime cover.

Lucan my 13mth old Lab is £13.?? per month and Bracken my 4yr old Pointer is £17.?? per month.

I've just moved Bracken from M&S (knowing his pre existing conditions will not be covered) as their premiums were going up by a hefty £60 every year. I did an online quote just out of curiosity with Bracken's details but aged 9, he's 4 at the moment, they quoted £58 per month! Shocked
Did the same with Axa, £35 per month, and the cover is almost identical!

Gyp my crossbreed is with Animalcare, she's now 11-12yrs old has heart and arthritis meds that we claim for on a regular basis, her renewal has just gone up to £39.90 for the coming year, but her policy is for only £4000 per year vet fees.

Who is the free policy with? Pam makes a good point in her post above - if you end up with pup needing vet treatment under the free policy, that condition will be excluded from your new policy.

Thinking back to when we adopted one of our rescues years ago, I didn't want to use the free insurance company, so we took out our own policy straight away, for the reasons Pam mentioned.
