i`ve never used pet insurance before but have decided that this time i`ll take it out just to be safe. with banjo we had to work with behaviourists and if we`d had an insurance that covered that we`d have saved a fortune.
i`ve been looking at more than and pdsa in particular so if anyone on here can let me know what they think of them 2 i`d really appreciate it or even recommend another.
also would i be best waiting till he`s had his jabs and chipped before insuring him?? i`ve heard that if i cover him before these are done then the cost will be higher. it`s all totally confusing to me lol
the main things you need to look out for are what their maximum payment is in each year and whether they will pay for repeat illnesses. I've used Petplan and Sainsbury's and both have been fine. I think there is a thread somewhere on here specifically on insurance...put it in the search box. Make sure you read all the small print etc as things are often hidden away. Good Luck
i have been lookign on here and got quotes coming out my eye balls but i just don`t understand any of it lol. i know i want one with the highest pay out per condition and lifelong and that the excess isn`t stupidly high.
i`m really stuck on whether to wait till he has his jabs. i might ring a few round if i can ever get my landline working again and ask about it. i`m not sure either if the price for him will be higher as he won`t be neutered when i take it out?? if so will it drop once i have him fixed??
Don't wait for the jabs - get Banjo's insurance going right away. There is a two week delay between you taking out insurance and your dog being covered, and you won't be covered for any pre-existing conditions, so the sooner you start, the better.
Some companies won't insure puppies until they are 10 weeks old and almost all of them won't cover any illness within the first 2 weeks though they will cover accidents.
I think the question is whether they are up to date with their vaccinations - if he is too young for them, then yes he is up to date with them and you will be having them done when appropriate anyway. I wouldn't have thought being chipped would make a huge difference to the premium but you could play about with an online one to see. You should get an introductory discount which will bring the price down anyway and by renewal time you will be able to tick all the boxes.
Get him insured as soon as possible, so many dogs get into scrapes or develop rashes etc in the early days, then it will be forever excluded from your policy.
Make sure you get a policy that will pay out for the same condition year after year and not one that will only pay out for the first 12 months.
I use Direct Line and have had no problems but they have a maximum per condition over the lifetime of the dog rather than a maximum amount per year which then starts again at renewal date, so the £6k limit could potentially be used up quite quickly if operations were necessary.

Can't speak for the chipping as all my dogs are chipped from the outset.
Living around our way, you will find that most insurance premiums tend to be quite competitiive - I'm with More Than and they paid up very quickly on Clover's physio.

i just realised pdsa only pay out per condition, at least that`s the impression i get so more than looks to be best. does this quote look good?? also i put him down as being chipped as he`ll be getting his first jabs the day we pick him up so i`ll probably just have him chipped at the same time
I've just taken a policy out with argos for our 12week old.

I dont know what half of them really mean (i will have a good read once the policy booklet arrives) but as i understand it the important bit is the £7000 continuos policy and Argos seem to be rated highly by most

Was going to say the same as Joanna. I can't think of any good reason for delaying.
I have mostly Petplan policies and one with M&S (though I took that out when it was underwritten by AXA, which is no longer the case). All mine are cover for life with £x000 per year for vet fees, rather than per condition.
I thought breeders often arranged x free weeks insurance for pups going to new homes though?
