Ruby reacts like that to anything suspicious including Frontline drops. We have to take the no messing route otherwise I could spend hours messing around. I tend to do it in a small space so there isn't the room for her to wriggle free and she has learnt now to give in with ear cleaner/drops.
However Frontline drops are a different story and are a 2 man job. She is just not a sit still and let mum put them on dog!!! Any tips for putting Frontline on without it all pouring off would be gratefully recieved!!
Although I do generally train them from pups to accept me inspecting eyes, ears, teeth, claws, etc, when the dog has a sore ear and the vets drops stings, it can still make them damned wriggly and difficult to get it in.
I do the keep the bottle in my pocket thing to warm it up and so the dog hasn't just seen me go to the cupboard to get the Dreaded Ear Drops, Then if I know the dog is going to be a pain, I calmly back it into a corner, get a decent grip and go for it, all in a matter of seconds, then straight away release and go all Jolly Hockey Sticks, "There....All done now".
I tried all the nicey, nicey approaches but found after that first time, the dog never fell for it again and as soon as I started to stroke/ massage/ whatever they got suspicious and I didn't want them to associate me being nice, with nasty things happening, so I tackled it in much the same way as I did when my kids had to have their jabs......In, out and no messing about....then straight back to normal, as if nothing had really happened.

Una is like that now. She was ok about having anything done until she went into training and she had to have a couple of weeks of Vit B jabs which apparently sting like mad. Now as soon as she sees anything she knows is going on the back of her neck, she runs and wriggles, so I go round and put the Frontline on, as her Mum can't do it unless Una sits still.
I have to say, I tend to just do it, much the same as I do with the ear drops. I have the frontline open and ready in one hand and I hang onto her scruff with the other hand and just get the job done as quickly and painlessly as possible, then let her go again. Yes some of it ends up on top of her fur but this doesn't seem to stop it working, as she's never had fleas.
We've always' done a "vet check" inspection with Jack right from being a pup, but still when he hear's us shake the bottle we get him to do a down stay with a Bonio on the floor, then the other one does a vet check and sneaks the ear drops in while he's eye's are fixed on the bonio!
Still a bit wiggly sometimes but that kinda works with Jack..
Personally, when training, I always do it with the dog sitting. I start off training by just positioning the dog and giving it make believe drops, without even holding the dropper. Plenty of fuss straight after. I then progress to the same thing holding the dropper but no drops. Then when everything is taken in it's stride I give drops of plain water. I'm firm, but not hard. This Anna having ear drops, and the second is Amy having eye drops with Anna watching.
Hope you've managed to get the ear drops in Tabbitha!
When we got Luna she came with gunky ears so we were given ear drops that she hated. It was a 2 person job to hold the little wriggler still to get the drops in. Touch wood since then she hasn't needed drops. I regularly use the baby cotton buds (slightly larger than normal so can't push them too far into baby's ear hole!) to clean out her ears now and she actually seems to enjoy it!
I'm having to clean a cut on Luna's chest 2/3 times a day at the moment and she decided a couple of days ago that she didn't like it being done so despite my having taught her to 'lie down' and then show me her 'belly' she developed the ability to ignore my commands and needs a little help to remember that when I say 'belly' she rolls over!!! - a bit of tough love and a poke in the bump gets her in the right position!! She's being so good while I clean her up and is staying still in the position despite it obviously stinging/being sore. She's learnt that she can jump up when I say ALL DONE and she gets a special beefy-stick treat!
So a bit of stick and reward can sometimes be essential!
I have another faffer about when he see's the ear drops...no wonder though they poor bugger just isn;t getting out the bit with his ears.
Its a case of grab and go in this house, there's only me here during the day. I tend to stand behind Alfie, flick his ear back and its done..i do let him calm down before i do the other one.
I do think it is just the drops he hates, he has a nasty gash on his ear and he lest me bathe no problem and pit cream on it.
I have Basil that sits beautifully for eye drops and begrudgingly tolerates ear drops.
Nellie is the opposite, almost enjoys ear drops but closes her eyelids as tight as possible at the prospect of eye drops.
Annoyingly both seem to get their fair share of gunky eyes and ears
I practiced with water on both inbetween needing meds when they were young and so at least now they'll sit and let me do it as they realise it's happening whatever and there's a bonio if they let me get on with it.
Ear drops wise I ask the vets for surolan and don't use ear cleaners like epi-optic etc. I don't know if surolan is alcohol free or anything but it seems more tolerable to my two.
