Hi Guys,

We will be bringing our new puppy "Jake" home towards the end of September and just wanted to get your opinion on the best food for him and what type (dry / wet).

With our last dog we kept him on dry food, he started on BETA PUPPY.

Any recommendations??

Thanks

It's really trial and error with the food, isn't it Smile

I think I'd be inclined to start a young pup on wet food - but I'm certainly no expert. You might want to ask the breeder what she suggests and what she's feeding your pup at present?

As another LF member noted in another thread, the potential problem with the dry kibble is that the Labs gobble it down so fast there is a risk of them choking - I also worry that my dog is getting indigestion as he eats so quickly!

So you can moisten the dry kibble if you end up feeding that to your pup.

The brands I think are better are:

Arden Grange
Burns
Wainwrights

Dexter is 15 months and I feed him dry food in the morning and then wet food at night Smile

For the first few weeks you'll be best off keeping the pup on whatever the breeder was feeding him, as too many changes in one go could result in a poorly tum. After that though the world is your oyster. There are so many food to choose from these day, it is very hard to know what is best and which foods will suit which dogs, so it's sort of a game of Suck it and See.

I personally steer clear of high protein puppy foods and put mine straight onto the foods my adults eat, whereas other people will recommend keeping a pup on Puppy Food until it is a year or more in age. Some people will recommend just dry complete food, some will recommend BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food), others will recommend cooked wet foods, such as Nature Diet. It really is an individual choice and as long as you feed a good quality food (ie nothing full of colourings, sugars and fillers) then your pup should do well, no matter which food you choose.

If I was pushed to recommend dry complete brands then I'd go for...

James Wellbeloved
Arden Grange
Burns
Skinners
Wainwrights

And wet food, I'd recommend Nature Diet.

Vets uk are pretty reasonable for bulk. There is a link you can follow that gives the oldie club a donation but I don't have it here. Though often times you can do better deals at the local wholesalers or petfood merchants.

We always tend to buy in bulk for that reason. Though recently we went up to our local place and the deals seem to have evaporated, along with the cheery cutomer service. It took a week for our oder to come, it was incorrect when it did come and things were missing. It was to take another week for them to correct it and I told them to stuff it!!! so I am going back to ordering directly from the manufacturer.

This is an excellent site that I use. Great prices and free delivery if you buy in bulk Laughing Laughing

I feed mine Nature Diet and Autarkey - both good food and available from here

I feed mine Naturediet (a good quality wet food - it has at least 60% meat and no nasty stuff).

I buy from Vet UK as Oldies Club gets a donation that way - thanks for the mention Fiona. If anyone does buy via Vet UK, you just need to click on their logo on this page: http://www.oldies.org.uk/?page_id=534 and then shop as normal and the OC will get a donation Smile

I've found their prices really good and if you order enough you get free delivery too (I think it's £39+).

For dry foods, I think Arden Grange is good and well priced and Orijen is a bit more expensive but is 70% meat/fish with no wheat etc.

We have decided, after talking with the Breeder to start them on Royal Canin Maxi Junior which is what the breeder uses, it seems the best idea.

Have been doing my research and it looks ok.

Charlie does very well on RC and I have no complaints about it (well it could be cheaper) Smile

I've used a lot of online sites to order. VioVet were very quick and efficient. Have also used VetUK as some of the others have suggested because Angela had said about the Oldies club and I thought if I was ordering anyway they might as well get the benefit Smile
