|
It was a year ago yesterday that I received the devastating news from DftD that my 3rd pup-dog, Lister, had died. He was 2 years old. He had left me in the January to start his assistance dog training, and whilst he was in great health while he was with me, he was persistently ill throughout his 7 months of training, with ear infections, tummy upsets, etc. Although I only live 4 miles from the training centre I wasn't offered any 'visiting rights' for the entire 7 months, until a week before he was due to move training centres as he'd been matched with a client in the north. I was due to see him on the Thursday, but got the call that he had died on the Monday. He died from multiple organ failure due to sub-acute pneumonia - a serious illness that he would have been suffering from for at least a fortnight prior to his death, a serious illness that wasn't picked up by DftD or by their vet, who had admitted him as an inpatient 3 days prior to his death after deciding that he had lungworm.
I still have a lot of anger and hurt over all this - that DftD kept on putting him through training instead of trying to get to the bottom of all his 'little' infections, that he was being worked and put through his final assessments while he was seriosuly ill (which I was told 'he could have done better at' - and I'm sure he would have done had he not been so ill) that the vet a) misdiagnosed his illness and b) didn't recognise a dying dog when they saw one, and that I never did get to see my boy again to say goodbye.
Anyway ... the point of this post is really to say that I am even more convinced now that they don't really leave us. Yesterday, the anniversary of his death, I had a mega clear-out of my desk and various stacks of paperwork that had been lurking for ages. The very last piece of paper that I picked up was the note from the crematorium with the date that Lister was cremated. And just in case that wasn't enough, today I took an order from a Mr Lister. I know that many would regard these 'signs' as pure co-incidence, but I like to think that they are more than that.
Here's my beautiful boy, when he was still fit and healthy and in my care ...
... looking totally squishable at 3 months old ...
... and tall, dark and handsome at 14 months ...
RIP my gorgeous boy - I always knew that you would come home x
