Are potatoes dangerous for labs?i know they cant have chocolate and onions but potatoes ?

i had an email off burns today saying to stay away from potato and onions. im worried now cos abbey had mash and sausage in her kong today. Is it just the carbs or are they poisonous which is why they shouldnt have them?

Can anyone shed any light?

thanks

I know onions are toxic to dogs, not heard of it in pots though, CJ`s had them when he and Cindy have finished off a stew, its not a regular thing tho.

Hopefully someone will know for sure Smile

In the old days potatoes were listed as part of the staple diet! But then, one book I have lists onions as well and we now know that’s NOT a good idea. I do not feed potatoes, but if I am giving my dogs a little of what I'm having I do not bother to examine it for small quantities.

Regards, John

My vet tried Elsa on a fish and potatoe mix when she was young as she was an itchy puppy. It didn't help but Elsa liked it, It was very expensive though.

I had a lab when I was a teenager that used to love raw potatoe. Unfortunately when visiting the vet, when he was constipated (the dog, I mean Smile ) we discovered it was the potatoe that was causing it, so had to deny him this treat.

I'm confused too! When my old lab was poorly with allergies the vet told me to put him on boiled fish and potatoes only for 6 weeks. I sometimes add our left overs to the dogs meals which may include potatoes. I hate it when people say not to do something but don't give the reason why!!! Shame on you Burns!!!!!

Dogs can't digest raw potatoes. I know that for a fact --once when one of my dogs got into the neighbours bin (long story Rolling Eyes) the next day he threw up. Guess what he threw up? raw potatoes, lots of them.

COOKED potatoes are fine but avoid raw onces (not that anyone with half a brain cell would feed a dog raw potatoes anyway!)

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and information on potatoes.

I think a little cooked potato is going to be fine occasionally but i wouldnt give her raw anyway.

Thanks again for helping to clarify the question

I feed my dog cooked potatoes from time to time. I just cook them then give him one hole. He loves it, and iv never had any problems with upset tummys, sickness etc.

I must admit that my old boy loved a piece of potato peel and had a some most days of his life. Not the he ever had much, but it certainly never did him any harm.
