Just to add that while I was looking after a friend's Lab, he was enjoying a rawhide bone and then suddenly I noticed the end of it was covered in blood... The bone or a shard from it had cut his gum.
I don't give Dexter any bones at present but may well get him some raw ones - never cooked ones, as I've always been warned that these are dangerous.

My 2 pay no attention whatsoever to nylabones and i REALLY wish they did
I've fed mine smoked, steralised and cooked bones and thankfully not has a problem but now i only feed them raw. Could you not feed her a raw bone in the garden? thats what i do with mine, just chuck them outside with one each and once thet've finished i throw them away. I get them free and they love a good chew and their poos are white and so easy to pick up afterwards
I feed mine raw and hated the thought of it and was super super careful to keep everything clean after any raw food touched it but i've now got use to it but i know how your OH must feel.
