Coco has a smoked bone (possibly a shin bone - about 8" long 1.5-2" wide) that has been kicking around for months, she had a chew of it when she first got it and hasn't done much with it since until this week. She has suddenly got renewed interest and has been having a good old gnaw on it. She has managed to break a few bits off and has eaten them, is this safe or are they likely to come off in shards which will harm her? (We don't do raw bones due to my OH's raw meat/hygiene issues).

I know one of our trainers gives them to her dogs and says they last for months but I'd be interested to know anyone else's experiences.

I can't say I've ever fed the smoked bones (I can't stand the smell of them) but I do have some of the hard sterilised bones knocking about, which the dogs chomp on intermittently. I haven't had any problems with them so far and they have only ever managed to get little bits off them, so I haven't been worried.

i used smoked bones. They are air dried smoked ones, prob similar to how you do fish i suppose so they aren't cooked, just dried.
Not had a problem with them, the ends tend to be crumbly and then the middle bits hang around for ages!

Ours have raw beef knuckles once a week.
The gristle and meat on them is great for their teeth.

and its amazing how much of the actual bone they eat too.

works a treat for drying out the numbers 2's so easier pooper scopping Wink

Coco's smoked bone sounds like the one Tess has been ignoring since she was a puppy! So far there's nary a dent in it, but I live in hopes she'll show an interest eventually Very Happy

At the moment, Tess has a knuckle bone from the butcher's about once a fortnight, or a young beef rib with some meat on - she seems to prefer em raw! I've been putting them in the freezer in bags between chomps because I really dont' want flies around, even outside!

I've fed Poppy both the smoked and raw type bones (from shops not butchers so not super fresh raw - not sure what they do to them!!). I stopped the smoked ones as I didn't like the shards coming off (felt they might be ratehr sore coming out the other end!!) and I stopped feedign her the fresher type for 2 reasons - the last one she ate she kept sicking up little bits even though she's previously been fine. I was going to give her the last one i had but this went in the din after a dog on here got a piece stuck in her throad (I think it was Shady) and was very ill as a result. So, the only type of bones in my house are hide ones now - I am a worry wort though!!

Thanks for all your replies. I think the remainder will go in the bin, I don't want any shards causing damage.

We don't do raw because apart from OH's hygiene issues (everything has to be sterilised after raw meat has been within 3 feet of it) Coco seems to get the runs on the rare occasions I have given her the dried bones from the pet shop.

Rawhide chews are also a no-no now because she tends to swallow the last bit in huge chunks.

It looks like we're down to nylabones then.
