Hi Liz,
It's very hard to base your insurance choice on a recommendation, as to be honest if you look hard enough you will find positive and negative stories for every insurer. As lovethemlabs said, in most cases you get what you pay for.
I'm going to make a shameless plug for the site I run now - www.ComparePetCare.co.uk - check out the dog insurance page, and the lifetime insurance page, whilst we can't compare the prices (as they vary so much depending on breeds, post code/location, etc) we can compare the fees they will cover you for, and a few of their features. I would highly advise getting a number of quotes from the insurers within each policy type, and with similar Defaqto ratings, this should help show you what value you're getting.
Hope that helps in some way,
Greg
