My name is Debbie and I got my Lab puppy Lottie last Thursday. I bought her from a lady in the South East and then when I got her home I looked more carefully at her inoculation record and realised she had had her jabs in Wales.
I know I've done the wrong thing by buying from this type of person, I knew when I was there if I'm honest, but she was the last one in the litter and I couldn't leave her, just the sort of person these breeders/puppy farmers hope for!
Anyway she's here now and I love her to bits, so whatever happens in the future, any health problems that may occur, I'll deal with it.
She is settling in really well, brilliant at toilet training, very few accidents. She is quite shy, which my guess is because she has not been raised correctly, but she is gradually coming out of her shell and beginning to act like a normal puppy, I'm just letting her do this in her own time as she gains confidence.
She is eating well, at first she was practically inhaling her food, but she's calmer now that she knows she gets regular meals. She wasn't starved, however she was a little under weight, but she has gained this fast, in fact I'm cutting her meal size down a little as I think I've been over feeding.
Lottie is my first Lab, although I have owned dogs for many years. I just lost my Great Dane boy and couldn't face having another as they are so short lived. I do also have a Lhasa Apso called Truffle and so far she and Lottie are getting on well together.
I've found reading through some of the posts on the forum very interesting and informative and I'm sure it will be very helpful in the future.
I hope the fact that I've bought a pup from a dubious source won't be held against me, I know I've done things wrong, but the most important thing to me now is that Lottie lives a happy, healthy life.
I bought my first dog from a Pet Shop (I called her Lottie too ) for much the same reason as you....I just couldn't leave her there. I think that makes us human, that's all .
You're just human, I know exactly why you couldn't leave her and anyway it sounds like you are the perfect owner for her so maybe sometimes things are meant to be, you've already got some weight on her, you're experienced with dogs and know about the health issues anyway and of course you joined LF so you must be brilliant
Really sorry to hear about your Great Dane.
Lottie looks beautiful to me and I look forward to seeing and hearing much more about her as she grows up.
It's been a long time since I posted here, but thought I'd give an update on Lottie, who is now 20 months old.
Well she spent the first year happily chewing everything she could, including carpet, walls and woodwork! The shy little pup I brought home very soon transformed in to a bundle of trouble.
She started off being very good with her toilet training and then took a backwards step for a good few months, however she came right and she has been 100% for ages now.
She went through a stage of barking constantly at the back door to go out and then come back in again, but again it was a stage and now she just barks when she needs to go out.
The thing that drove me crazy was her early morning rising, anything from 5am and this went on for about the first year. Now most mornings she will go until around 7am which is fine for me.
She has never been upstairs in the house, she just has a total phobia about them, even food won't tempt her. She has no problems with steps when we're out walking, so I'm not worried about her staying downstairs at home. At first I thought if she came upstairs I might get a morning lay in, but now I just think she'd have only had more house to chew.
As a pup Lottie did suffer from runny tummy quite a bit. I had decided to feed complete as I thought it would be nice and easy, however I'd always fed my Danes raw and so decided to go this route with her and no more loose poo. Other than this she has been very healthy so far.
Lottie is good on the lead, good off lead, although can still become deaf if she sees another dog to play with, a work in progress. She has the most fantastic temperament, she loves everyone & everything.
I have to admit there were times during the first year when she nearly drove me around the bend and I cursed the day I got her, but I would not swap her for the world now. I hope that anyone who is struggling through the puppy stage can read this with hope for the future.
This is Lottie with my daughter. Reason for the posed photo is that my daughter has lost quite a bit of weight and wanted some photos of herself!
Here she is back in the summer with my granddaughter.
Lovely photo of lottie and your daughter, I love the way Lottie is looking up at her Grand daughter and a nearly grown-up Lottie look like they were about to have fun on the beach!!
