Most vets really don’t know that much about individual dog foods, and this is borne out by the fact the Skinners F&T puppy food is in fact LOWER protein than the Royal Canin.
But don’t forget, puppy food is really not needed anyway! I consider it "Devils Food!" It was only ever introduced by pet food manufacturers in order to make more money. Making money is the reason for these companies very existence! There is no such thing as puppy food in the wild, and never was any manufactured puppy food until around 20 years ago. And believe me, none of my dogs ever suffered from malnutrition, and none ever had bone and joint problems. I honestly believe that a large share of the problems we are seeing now can be levelled at the door of puppy food.
There is no reason for feeding puppy food once a pup's mouth is big enough to manage the slightly larger adult food, and certainly I believe all pups should be on adult food by 6 months at the latest.
Oscar was raised on Skinners F& T puppy and I switched Molly onto it when we got her at 5 months old too. They are both healthy and well on it and not at all overweight.
Please please please feed back to your vet his innaccuracy! Even a quick email just pointing out his mistake! Or he will never know he is talking out of his belly button

Yes, I will !! (Although they think they know it all, don't they ? )
I will take him a list with the relevant protein levels !!

Hi John
Thanks for that. At what age then would you move her to the adult version ?
I fed Lucan on Skinners F&T puppy and switched to the F&T Duck & Rice at 5mths old. I've been very happy with the way he's grown at a slow steady rate, he's very fit, developing good muscle tone and has a lovely shiny coat that often gets commented on.
Just stick to the Skinner's puppy food. I bring up mine on them until 6 - 8 months old which works out to 2 bags per puppy.
Afterwards I switch them to F&T Crunchy and they are doing great on it.
Do you choose the flavour within the brand depending on what you think is better or what the dog seems to prefer? Some of the foods do smell - e.g. fishy ones seem to be particularly pungent! and how come some are crunchy, some muesli some don't have any carbs, I'm never sure which one is best even within the brand never mind changing brands, I wish they made the whole thing clearer! And I'm with you Rosie the Vets make it even worse I'm sure they're on a mission to drive us round the bend!
