I have just got back from a visit to my vets with Sasha who is now 10 weeks old.

I have been feeding her on Royal Canin but wanted to change her to Skinners F&T as I had read some really good reports on LF and it is VAT free ! Very Happy

The vet said I should avoid the F&T as it has too much protein in for the puppy and she will grow too quickly. I should put her on a puppy maxi food. The b****y thing is I have just bought a 15kg bag of it to change her too. Shocked

Could I please have some comments from the experts out there !!

I really thought I had done my research and had made a final decision. Rolling Eyes

I bet the vet was selling Royal Canin ? lots of people on here have brought their dogs up on Skinners, and it's absolutely fine. Personally, I would feed it with confidence (and do). The vets are just after their commission IMO Laughing

Unless I'm very much mistaken, RC Maxi has a higher protein content the Skinners puppy which is 26% (but the vet won't sell Skinners Wink )

That being said, I use RC puppy, because I've been very impressed with results from my last three litters. The new owners get a 5kg bag, and I recommend them to stay on the RC until the pup is around 6/9 months old.

I then switch my dogs on to Skinners FT Crunchy when they are off puppy food.

You will be fine with the Skinners, if you decide to feed that.

Andrew

I'm no expert, but Mole had F & T Duck and Rice Puppy food until she was 6 months and then I put her on the adult, with no problems at all x

Like Karen says be careful in being sold foods by vets.

Have a look at the ingredient anaylsis on both packets! - Royal Canin Junior Maxi actually has higher levels of protein at 32%. Whereas Skinners Puppy has 27%.

My vet recommends that a young lab up to the age of 12 months should be on a large breed puppy food so that their growth rate is slightly slower to allow for all the ligaments and bones to grow properly before too much strain is put onto the joints - especially the hips.

Stick to your plan Gail, there's nothing wrong with Skinners, it's about the same level of protein as many other puppy foods. This is a useful review site:

To be fair I don't think it was that. The vet push Hills. He just said to put her on a maxi puppy as the F&T one would make her grow too quickly. Shocked

Yes, the RC is 32% protein, Hills 28.1% (which the vets sell) and Skinners 27%.

So, having read all the other comments I think I will stick with my original plan. Thanks everyone you have all made me feel a lot better !!

I used Skinners puppy until 7 months, then changed to duck & rice
Had no problems it's great, certainly didn't make him grow too fast!

Lola was fed on Skinners F&T pupppy and has been absolutely fine on it.

She's a little on the small side and a wee bit skinny still but thats just her build I think but it certainly hasn't made her grow too quick. If you think about it Skinners is designed for certain breeds as its a working dog food.

I have experimented with CSJ Performance 21 too, which is also VAT free and gets very good reviews, so that may be another one to consider.

My Vet also went on about the quality of cheap foods and I did a fair amount of research between what they were selling (Hills) and Skinners and didn't find Skinners wanting at all.
