Alfie has to have his nails clipped once a month, he has very brittle nails and if I dont keep them short they split he had to have a GA last time
It is costing me £17 every time I go so I am thinking I should start doing them myself but which clippers are best? Has anyone tried the pedi paws, it lookd great!
Sorry to hear Alfie has this problem. It looks good Lorna! I struggle with clippers, and manage to cut about one claw a month, and end up in a sweaty, palpitating heap because Alfie hates it so much.
Would be very interested to hear what others think.
I've never used the Pedi-paw, I use the scissor type. But I've often thought of trying a Pedi-paw. Let's face it, they are not expensive.
If you get one it might pay to start it up and let tour dog get use to the noise and the feel of the vibration on the skin first, before starting on the claws. Get him use to the idea first.
Joanna, have to be honest with you, Gladys loved the zippy bed but the boys just wouldn't get on it! It was much to big just for Gladys so I passed it on to my sister who has miuch more room than me and I am happy to report that her boy, Baxter, loves it!
I wouldn't try the pedi paws tbh, it's like a whirring emery board that you hold in place for a few seconds to effectively sandpaper down the claw, I prefer a single quick snip of each claw with clippers.
I trim both of mine roughly each fortnight, that way I'm taking little and often off.
I use the mikki scissor type (i'll see if i can find a link). it has a little safety guard on it too , just in case you have a wriggler.
Basil has really brittle claws that split too, currently his dew claw is in a real mess. I'm not sure what can be done to prevent it really.
I bought a pedi paw thingie and it is ok... but it takes FOR EVER!
I have a nail drill for work and bought a drill bit just for the dogs and it does exactly the same but with a diamond tip. Thing is it is tedious and time consuming when a quick clip and its over is easier. Hudson HATES getting his nails done with a fiery passion from hell! But he will lie on his back snoring if I use the drill or pedi paw on him!

I find that lots of treats really help if the dog isn't happy about having claws cut, as some of my rescues haven't been.
I give them a treat (home made tuna cake usually) as I am doing it to start with to get them to have a more positive association with the process and as they get used to it, reduce the amount of treats given but always give them a treat at the end at least. This method also works well with getting them used to having things put in their ears etc.
