My wife and I had Wispa insured from the moment we picked him up, we also had him micro-chipped for piece of mind.
I just think for £9 a month they deserve it!! If the unthinkable happens and they get a serious injury or an illness it just gives piece of mind for us that we can get him treated in the best way possible.
Does every one else have insurance for their Labs and what do you think about it?
I can't help on the technical side of things but I know we are with M&S Premium Insurance with life cover or whatever it is. We were with them for our old dog Blaze, a German Shorthaired Pointer and they were great she says so we got Inca done with them too.
I wan't too sure about the expense of insurance until Perro ruptured his cruciate ligament and needed surgery. Then I knew what insurance was for.
Some don't have insurance but have an 'emergency fund' if things go wrong.
My lot are very active dogs who spend a lot of time chasing through fields and ditches and for me, the monthly payment means that all my dogs can have whatever treatment they need if (heaven forbid) they get injured and I don't have to be concerned about the cost.

All our dogs are insured - but we pay an awful lot more than £9 a month for each one
I don't know what policy you have, but it's worth checking now that you have cover for life, that the £x amount for vet bills renews each year with the policy, as others have come unstuck finding that once they've claimed for a certain amount that's it
i'll definately review what we've got if you think £9 is abit cheap. Still, i wouldnt be without some sort of insurance. i cant imagine losing Wispa because we were too tight to get the little bugger insured.
Dahlia and our two cats as well are insured.
After reading LF I made my research and made sure Dahlia's cover is a lifetime one. We pay £19.50 with Pet Guard and that's the best quote we got for this type of cover. Pet Guard has good reviews too in regards to paying out for treatments and their customer service.
Touch wood I never had to actually use pet insurance for any of my furs
Definitely check that you have got full cover there for £9, it seems very cheap. You will probably find that it only covers any condition for 12 months and after that time nothing related to that condition will be claimable (eg any joint or skin problem now would mean that after 12 months you couldn't claim again).
I have a policy which pays £6000 maximum per condition over the life of my dog (not a lot if you need to pay for an operation and follow up care), I think I'm stuck with it now because I may have some exclusions. I wish I had taken a policy which has a maximum payout per year, starting again each renewal.
If you have been to the vets at all with anything please be aware that changing policies can mean that anything on your dog's vet record will be excluded from future claims.
Edited to add: My policy in the first year was £16 per month with a 30% discount, so just over £11 per month. This year it went up to £21 per month and Direct Line are by no means the most expensive company. I have been happy with their service when I claimed but they don't do the lifetime policy that I would have preferred.
I've thanked you all for your advice, i just double checked our policy now that i understand it more (first time owner). We only had £2,500 for up to 12 months! Plus they only go to a max of £4,000! We are going to cancel and go with some1 else i think. I'm quite glad i made this thread now
Its from ASDA: £6,000 Cover (no limit of treatment cover)
£1,000,000 3rd party liabilty
£1,500 quarantine
Holiday cancellation and a few other bonuses like boarding if we are in hospital.
Its down as just under £20 a month, i think we'll go for it but would like your advice!
I would say go for a life cover ella has had HD diagnosed at 7 months old 2 ops later £6000 lighter for more than insurance. If she wasn't covered I couldn't have had the ops done she is covered for £7000 per year per condition
