It is beyond me how stupid some people can be I was once driving along a narrow country lane to be confronted by a woman riding a horse with 3 dogs running loose with her. How on earth could she have had any sort of control over them. Yes it was a pretty quiet road but on more than one occasion I have had to take to the verge to avoid speedy "white van man" !!!
I do wonder though how on earth do they train guide dogs for the blind not to take off with their owners, I know for certain that Billy would never have been selected.
Daily people take the risk and think that their dog will never have or cause and accident

One of the dogs I walk is constantly off lead when he is with his owner and it makes me cringe and feel very angry. It's so dangerous and arrogant. Every time he sees me his head goes up and we've had a few near misses where I've been on the opposite side of the road with Lottie. Some people won't listen and certainly will never learn until the very worst thing happens. I've tried and tried but his owner thinks he knows best
Never in a million years would I take the risk. Our dogs are just too precious.
A lab was run over in our village last week off lead. Luckily he is fine but hope it teaches his owners a thing or two.
Twenty five odd years ago, when I spent my life travelling,I worked 6 months of the year,in a garage in a narrow street.
Nearly every morning I'd see a girl walking her German Sheppard, off lead, along the pavement to her home.It was a lovely well behaved dog, until it decided to cross the narrow street.I guess it had smelt something and stepped off the pavement just as a big delivery lorry came speeding down the street.I'll save you the rest, but to my dieing day,I will never forget the screams of distress of the poor girl.
Another occasion, whilst travelling on my bicycle,on my way through the Appenine mountains of Italy to Greece,a huge big dog came rushing out of a garden(gate open!!!) when it saw me pass.Straight out in to the road behind me,then I heard the horrendous sickening thud as a car hit it....
DON'T TAKE RISKS AND ASSUME YOUR DOG WILL BEHAVE IN A WAY THAT IT HAS ALWAYS BEHAVED !!!

I had a scary moment the other day. A couple were walking their small dogs on the opposite path. I was busy trying to distract Dexter when I heard them screaming 'Toby'. I'm not sure if the dog was off lead or just managed to escape somehow but suddenly the dog came flying across the road to see Dexter. A car had to slam on its brakes and thankfully missed the dog by about a foot. I kept checking Dexter's lead was secure all the way home.
dogs off lead on roads, there is a lovely little jack russell pup, maybe 10 weeks old? living round the corner from us, it is walked off lead alone a busyish street.
at the mo it just scampers along behind the owners but where is this likely to end!
Theres a guy near us who never has his spaniel on a lead..thinks it knows the green cross code!! It trots ahead of him, running in and out of all the front gardens on its way up the road before crossing the cul de sac on its own....He thinks it doesn't need to be on a lead..well, oneday she chased a cat into the road both of them right in front of my car and I had to do an emergency stop
It made me so cross as had I run over someone elses dog and cat I'd have been devastated and would also have probably been seriously yelled at by both owners just to make things worse!! I think its so irresponsible. I know someone else who does the same thing..dog walks ahead and they trust it to stop at kerbs etc. Why????
I don't trust either of mine an inch!! In fact I probably lead walk them too much because I won't let them off unless I am as sure as I can be that they can't run into trouble. Tomorrow Olly is going to meet deer for the first time (I know, should have been ages ago but there aren't any near me) and I'm really nervous how he's going to behave. We'll be with the trainer, but I'm so worried we're going to have a 'Fenton' moment - keep your eyes on YouTube!!
