My 6-month-old lab seems to be urinating frequently, and I'm not sure if I should be alarmed or not. He urinates about every 15-30 minutes, and can't seem to hold it for the 4-5 hours that we leave him at home when I'm gone to work. We have been caring for our neighbor's dog lately (also a lab), and I'm not sure if maybe that has something to do with the change in his routine. Our puppy Max is housetrained and had no trouble holding it before when we were gone, and he certainly never went to the door as much either. His pee is also a light color, clear really, if that makes a difference. I hate to rush him to the vet for no reason, but I don't want to ignore it either.. Any help would be appreciated.

I would take him to the vet - it may well be a urinary infection.

I strongly advise a trip to the vet. I would also keep track of the amount of water consumed. Please keep us posted.

Hi Bradleysmum,
Max seems to be Ok today. He went a couple times this morning -- nothing excessive-- and then I had both of the dogs with me in the car while I was running errands and he didn't have an accident. He was also fine yesterday when I left him alone while I went to work. The fact that he has good days and bad days makes me think that maybe it is a behavioral problem and not a medical problem, but I'm no expert. I've got to take our other Lab in for shots tomorrow and so I might ask then what he thinks and whether it's worth bringing Max in..

I have the same problem with my Lab. He is 4 1/2 months old. My vet thinks it is just the whole puppy thing. I did take a urine sample in and he said it was fine except it showed he was drinking too much. There is no urinary tract infection. Also, I had him tested for Lyme Disease. This disease can affect their kidneys and make them urinate more. He does not have that either. I am thinking about changing food. I have him on Iams Large Breed Puppy Food. I am going to soon change to either Pro Plan or Eukenuba and see if that makes a difference with his constant peeing and drinking. My friend had her two dogs on a food that made one pee and drink all the time. The other dog it did not affect.

Took Max to the vet last week and all is well. He figures ( and I kind of did too) that it he was just trying to mark his territory since we had the neighbor's dog staying at our house. Sure enough, the neighbor's dog wasn't there today and Max's trips outside were far less frequent. I'm glad I took him in though, I feel better being safe rather than sorry.

Hi Brenda,
Sounds like it might be a good idea changing your puppy's food yes. We originally started our puppy on Royal Canin, but it didn't agree with him at all (frequent diarrhea ) As soon as we changed his food, it all stopped and he has been fine eversince. He is now on Purina Pro Plan, and is doing very well on it. Judging by everything i have read on a similar food thread, it looks like some of our labs have very sensitive stomachs bless them. Hope your puppy gets on better with his new diet, keep us posted. Regards

So pleased to hear Max is ok, well done for taking him to the vets, definately better to be safe than sorry i agree. It's interesting he's marking his territory, bless, just wanting to make sure it's his home only hey.
Thanks for letting us know. BFN

I finally got that bag of Pro Plan out and it has made a big diffence with my puppy. The peeing all the time and constant drinking has stopped. I know it was the food now. He is only drinking and peeing half as much as what he was on the Iams. I know Iams is a good food, but it did not work for my pup.
