Looking for a natural flea treatment for your dog or cat? Billy No Mates! is a very effective, natural flea, mite and tick repellent. The aromatic combination of mint, seaweed, fenugreek, neem leaves and lemon balm should be simply sprinkled over your dog - or cat's food and as well as repelling 'boarders' is great for skin and coat condition. As the product can take up to 6 weeks to really get into the dog's system, we would recommend you start using BNM from around Easter onwards.
I used this last year up until the end of October and the dogs didn't carry livestock. They also have garlic daily but that alone doesn't deter ticks in my experience. I'll be starting them again soon on BNM as I believe it to be kinder to the dogs rather than chemicals and has been much more effective.
The only thing is if you have pet insurance most will state in the t&cs that you HAVE to get your dog flead, wormed and vaccination otherwise they wont cover you.
I dont like paying vets to do these thngs either, espcially vaccinations, i think they're pointless and just a money-making move but if i dont get it done and I need to claim I'm not covered without proof these thing have been done.
I bath my dogs in Aubreys Organimals shampoo a few times throughout the summer. It contains Pennyroyal, which is a natural parasite repellent. Even after a couple of months, if the fur gets wet, the scent of the shampoo is still very much apparent.
I saw the other say that Johnsons have started to do their plastic herbal flea collar for dogs again. Many years ago, when I had cats as well as dogs, I used these collars and the dogs never had visitors, despite the cats regularly bringing in mice, etc. I didn't have carpets though, which probably helped to stop any stray fleas from breeding.
I prefer to use garlic oil capsules that I get from Holland and barrett. I have had dogs for 10+ years now and have not used anything else, and have had no problems with fleas but garlic has other benefits too
I put a very small amount of garlic powder into their food daily. So far, the occasional ticks and fleas that i have found on the dogs were dead... Also another trick that i have done is to rub a raw garlic on their paw pads...

I have just started all of mine back on that, too.
I hate the chemicals in frontline and had looked for an alternative for quite some time. This seemed to work very well for me as last year I had no problems whatsoever. It is also good for their coats.
You have to initially mix it in rather well as it is VERY herby.. They soon get used to it.
I have used Billy No Mates for a few years now and not seen any livestock on my dogs - and as they are in close proximity to hundreds of others at flyball competitions regularly I would be surprised if there were zero fleas around looking for tasty new flesh to try.
Surely if you are using this it would count on the insurance side or does the policy only state chemicals can be used?

i`ve never heard of that in my life, i know insurance states they must be vaccinated regularly but i`ve never seen on any policy i`ve had about flea and worming especially not that you must have a vet flea and worm pets, in fact i`ve never even had my vet tell me that either!
i`ve heard garlic works well too, not tried it myself but may switch over as i`m not too keen on the chemicals in flea treatments, especially since fleas become immune to them in the long run not to mention i have cats and a few of them can be toxic to cats
I don't flea mine at all, but have frontline in and will treat if I see a flea/tick (this is what my vet's recommend). I have used Billy No Mates, but my vet actually told me to avoid using it as Dexter was a very sensitive boy and the aromatic herb mix could aggravate some of his problems.
As for the insurance, I was under the impression that you were covered for anything not related to vaccination/worming/fleaing, regardless of whether you treat them or not?
