So these things are like slip leads / check chains but they tighten around the muzzle?.....well I've learnt something new, even if it isn't too nice

They tighten around the muzzle AND at the back of the neck.
The tightening at the back of the neck is the real issue with regards to injury, as if the dog flips about or is yanked, serious damage can occur to the cervical vertebrae.
There are several documented cases of Dobermans (considered to be a long-necked breed) suffering irrepairable damage to the cervical vertebrae and discs through wearing Haltis and Gentle Leaders.
